GUNNISON, COLO. —
Marissa Torres turned in a stellar performance in goal on Thursday afternoon, as she debuted for the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (0-0-1) at Western State (0-0-1). The junior goalkeeper made 11 saves to preserve a scoreless tie as the teams opened their seasons at Gateway Field.
Historical Perspective
- The contest marked Eastern's first tie in a season opener
- The result was ENMU's first non-loss in a season opener since 2006
- The Greyhounds had only gone to overtime in two previous season openers (vs Colorado-Mines in 2011 and Regis in 2013). Today was the first double-overtime season opener.
- The game moved ENMU to 17-12-14 in overtime games
- Eastern has registered seven scoreless ties, with the last coming in 2013, when the team had three.
- Torres' 11 saves were one away from tying for seventh in a game by an ENMU goalkeeper and five away from Carolyn Vincent's record of 16 (2003 vs College of the Southwest)
- Valeria Jaramillo's seven shots were one away from tying for ninth on the ENMU single-game list
- Western State moved to 1-2-3 against Lone Star Conference teams
Beyond The Box Score
- With just over 20 minutes expired in the second half, the Mountaineers had their best scoring opportunity with three shots. Torres saved one, while Jessica Kresl hit the ENMU goal post at the 66:47 mark.
- The Greyhounds went on the attack with just under 15 minutes to play in regulation, with three shots, which included two on goal.
