PORTALES, N.M. — Since the Eastern New Mexico University football team closed the 2013 season with a win over Texas A&M-Commerce to clinch a share of the Lone Star Conference championship, the Lions have suffered just one setback in league play. Sixth-ranked A&M-Commerce (2-0; LSC 1-0) came to Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium on Saturday, and handed the Greyhounds (1-2; LSC 1-1) a 49-10 setback in LSC play.
The series between the teams started in 1984, and the win moved the Lions to 15-12 against Eastern. It also marked the fourth road win for Texas A&M-Commerce over the Hounds in 12 meetings. ENMU entered the game with a NCAA-leading 455 rushing yards per game, but the Lions limited Eastern to 227 yards on 54 carries.
In the Numbers
- Texas A&M-Commerce ran 20 plays in the opening quarter and seized a 21-0 lead on three touchdown passes from Luis Perez
- The Lions added two touchdowns in the second quarter and held a 35-0 halftime lead
- ENMU's Bailey Hale kicked a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter
- Aaron Johnson's 35-yard catch in the fourth quarter was Eastern's longest play from scrimmage. One play later, Paul Terry had the second longest with a 27-yard touchdown run
- Kamal Cass, the nation's leading rusher, finished with 62 yards
- Tayshaun Gary added 48 rushing yards, while Adam Lucero had 33 yards
- Perez led the Lion offense with 342 passing yards and five touchdowns
- Tobi Amadi and Quavshaun Branch each had a team-high seven tackles for Eastern
The Eastern New Mexico University football team will hit the road next week, to visit Angelo State. The Lone Star Conference contest will kick off at 5 p.m. MT.
