PORTALES, N.M. –The Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team scored more points on the Midwestern State defense than the Mustangs have allowed since the 2007-08 season. Eastern fell to Midwestern 108-104 in a heartbreaker at Greyhound Arena despite an impressive offensive outburst. The Greyhounds move to 7-10 overall and 1-6 in Lone Star Conference action.
Â
"I'm very proud of the way we came out and put our foot down after seeing what MSU has done to Eastern these last few years," ENMU Head Coach
Tres Segler said. "I felt like my guys played like warriors. We've been looking for that mindset for the last few games and I think some guys found it tonight."
Â
"To beat a team like Midwestern, especially tonight with the addition of BJ Jenkins who was a JuCo All-American and has a chance to be one of the best guards in the Lone Star, to beat a team like that you can't make any mistakes late. In that overtime period, we gave up way to many offensive rebounds. To me, that was the story of the game. I think if we would've done better there, we really would've been in a better position to win the game."
Â
Eastern was led in scoring by junior guard
Marquise Harris, dropping 26 on 9-of-17 shooting and going 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. Senior guards
Chris Wyms and
CoRnell Neal each contributed six assists as the Greyhounds combined for 24 assists on 38 makes on the afternoon. Neal also finished with 16 points while junior guard
Joe Clarke had 14.
Â
"I'm very proud of the assists; we did a great job of sharing the basketball. Even some of our turnovers were guys trying to make a play for someone else. They weren't selfish turnovers. Marquise gave us some great offensive explosion. Joe made some tough baskets when he needed to.
Chris Wyms and CoRnell did a great job from the point guard spot.
Â
The Greyhounds were able to get out and run in transition, outscoring MSU 27-10 in the fast-break while the 'Hounds' bench outmanned the Mustangs, 46-18.
Â
"We had a team meeting after the Cameron game and
Chaunce Hill was the first one to really speak up in a mature way. I thought that his heart in that meeting really carried over into the game. He had some blocks tonight that were unbelievable. He had a huge dunk that provided us with a momentum spark in a big part of the game. I think for a good portion of the game he did a good job on Ibaka. Chaunce's motor is very special. He showed how it can impact a game tonight."
