Hounds Pick Up Fifth-Straight in Dominant Fashion Over Angelo State

PORTALES, NM – The Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team cruised to an 82-66 win over Angelo State on Thursday evening in front of a raucous crowd of 1,004 fans at Greyhound Arena. The fifth-straight Lone Star Conference win moves ENMU to 13-14 overall and 7-10 in LSC play.

"Tonight was an awesome game for our program, because everyone was involved," ENMU Head Coach Tres Segler said. "The balanced scoring really led to a fun game to watch for our fans. We had a great crowd and I'm very thankful for everyone that came out for such a big game. Saturday's Senior Night and we need everyone to come back. Our sights are set on getting to Allen and we have a lot of basketball left in us."

Thursday marked the first time since the 2004 season that Eastern has won five-straight games in league action. With a win on Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Greyhounds can secure a berth in the LSC Tournament in Allen, Texas. With a loss to the Javelinas, paired with an Angelo State loss to Western New Mexico, ENMU would be the No. 8 seed in the tourney.

"When we played at Angelo State earlier this year, we really didn't play our best basketball," Segler added. "Tonight we played a lot closer to our best and that was a big difference maker in the tempo of the game. My guys handled several different defenses very well. We did a good job of attacking. A lot of credit goes to Angelo and their trap; they did a good job of making the game closer there at the end. I was proud of our guys for making free throws down the stretch."

Defensively, ENMU frustrated the Rams offense for the majority of the evening. The Greyhounds forced 18 turnovers while allowing just six assists and holding ASU to 43% shooting on the night and just 15% from beyond the arc.

"I'm very proud of how we limited their scorers. Quay King has a chance to be the Player of the Year in the conference. I'm really impressed with his offensive game and for us to hold him to just six points was a mission accomplished. Prince Foster has done well since coming back from an injury. It was a team victory.

The Green and Silver featured a balanced offensive approach with three players in double-figures and eight players with at least eight points. Junior guard Lamarquis Thompson cashed in on another breakout performance on the hardwood, scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead the 'Hounds. Forwards Chris Lewis and Andre Hughes owned the paint, scoring 12-11, respectively, while Hughes knocked down a pair of crucial three pointers. That duo also pulled down six rebounds apiece. Junior guard Joe Clarke picked up four of the teams 13 assists, leading to a positive A/TO differential.

"Arcaim Lallemand has had some big games for us down the stretch," Segler said. "He scored the basketball in some moments that were really big for us. He executed a couple of sets very well. I'm proud of him for those baskets. Lamarquis came up with another big night. Chris Lewis had some huge rebounds and scores early that really set the tone. Javaan Mumtaz's nine points were mission critical and I think he and Chris Wyms made some timely threes that helped us. Andre started off hot and that's huge for us. When it goes through early for Andre, it takes the pressure off our offense. I'm proud of him for the maturity he's shown."

The Greyhounds return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. against the Javelinas in Greyhound Arena for Senior Night. For the latest news on all ENMU athletics, visit GoEasternAthletics.com.
