Cold Second Half Plagues Greyhounds Against Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team dropped a tough road test on the road at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, falling to the Lions, 85-67. Eastern was unable to overcome a slow star in the second half. With the loss, the Green and Silver move to 16-5 and 12-2 in Lone Star Conference action.

"We didn't have a lot of energy in the second half," ENMU Head Coach Josh Prock said. "It's disappointing, but we'll get better from this. You either learn or you don't. These kids have proven all year that they can learn and adapt. We shot very poorly in the second half. That affected our momentum. We just have to get better."

Senior Kassandra Harris finished with 18 points and four rebounds to lead the team. Daeshi McCants pulled down five boards while Sarina Johnson and Jasmine Hotchkins added 12 and 11, respectively.

The Greyhounds survived a 15-0 run by Commerce in the first quarter. Eastern produced a stretch of 3:30 without netting a field goal, going 0-7, but immediately responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 20-19. Despite the early hole, the Green and Silver regained the lead at the end of the first half, taking a 45-42 lead into the lockerroom at the intermission.

Kassandra Harris was dominant in the paint in the opening half, scoring 13 of the team's 18 points in the paint. The senior post went 4-of-6 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. As a team, Eastern distributed 12 assists to just seven turnovers in the first half. Brandi Gomez and Mikaehla Connor each dished out three dimes.

The Lions came out in the second half and mounted an 11-0 run over the first seven minutes of the second half and stretched the lead to 11 by the end of the third quarter. Eastern was unable to find a rhythm on the offensive end in the second half, shooting just 23% from the field in the final two quarters.

The Greyhounds return to the court on Tuesday against in-state rival Western New Mexico. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. against the Mustangs at Greyhound Arena. For the latest news on all ENMU athletics, visit GoEasternAthletics.com.
