DURANT, OKLA. — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team (0-5) concluded competition at the Southeastern Oklahoma State Regional Tournament on Sunday, against St. Mary's and St. Edwards.
Kylee Keller batted two-for three against St. Mary's, but the Hounds dropped a 3-1 decision. In the finale, St. Edwards rallied past the Hounds by a 5-2 score.
"We played way better today than we did yesterday," Head Coach
Katie Welborn said. "The taste of a loss doesn't taste any better no matter how you play, but I was proud of the way we played today. Our pitchers did great today, they worked hard every pitch. Our batters adjusted more today than they had been. We are starting to see glimpses of really-good ball. By Tuesday we should be firing on all cylinders."
Against St. Mary's
In the first inning, against the Rattlers,
Erikka Burke drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single from
Susannah Chandler. Burke sprinted home on a passed ball to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead.
St. Mary's plated two runs and in the second inning and a third in the fifth to pick up the win.
Kaylee Rogers went the distance for Eastern and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts. Jordan Russell struck out eight batters to earn the win for the Rattlers.
Against St. Edwards
The Hounds also struck first in the finale, as
Tiana Faagalulu's first-inning bases-loaded walk pushed the game's first run across the plate. Samantha Brockman cracked RBI double in the top of the fifth pushed Eastern's lead to 2-0.
Greyhound pitcher
Alyssa Lovato held the Hilltoppers in check and was working a shutout until they exploded for four runs in the bottom of the bottom of the fifth and added a fifth to earn the win.
Brockman batted three-for-four for ENMU.
Susannah Chandler added a pair of base hits.
"Overall this weekend was disappointing," Welborn added. "We did not play our best ball, and we did capitalize on many opportunities. However, we did continue to fight. It wasn't a pretty weekend, but it was a necessary building block for us."
The Eastern New Mexico University softball team will return to action on Tuesday against Colorado Christian. The doubleheader will start at 11 a.m. MST, and be played in Lubbock, Texas.
