PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team picked up its third-straight home win over West Texas A&M with a four-set thriller against the Lady Buffs on Saturday in front of over 500 rowdy fans. The match went back-and-forth the entire night, featuring 25 ties and 10 lead changes. ENMU improves to 6-9 overall and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference following the victory.
Â
"It means everything to represent our school in this way," senior libero
Andrea Aguilar said. "Every year we come out with a new team and we learn how to get the job done. It hasn't been easy; we've been busting our butts trying to get it done every year.
Â
"It's an indescribable feeling," senior middle blocker
Brooklyn Biel said following the win. "The fans know that it's a huge rivalry. Everyone focuses on football, but Monday, they're going to be talking about how the volleyball team beat WT."
Â
Aguilar finished the match with 36 digs, the fifth most in single-match history and the second most in a four set match behind only Caitlin Murphy's mark of 38 against Lubbock Christian on Oct. 21, 2008. Biel was a catalyst on both ends, picking up 14 kills and three blocks, good for 16 points.
Sarah Tuioti-Mariner and
Alexis Aguirre each posted a double-double. Tuitoi-Mariner tallied a match-high 22 kills while adding 16 digs. Aguirre handed out 31 assists and snagged 14 digs in the winning effort.
Â
After dropping the first set, the Green and Silver never looked back to secure the win. Trailing 16-14 in the second, ENMU Head Coach
Sia Poyer called a timeout. Out of the break, the Greyhounds mounted a 7-2 run. Even though the Lady Buffs rallied to tie the frame at 21, ENMU closed out the set on one of Tuioti-Mariner's six kills in the set.
Â
In the third set, Eastern utilized a .333 hitting percentage to easily take the set before going through a thriller of a fourth. Trailing 8-6 in the fourth, the Hounds strung together a 10-1 run and it appeared as if ENMU would run away with the match. Up 21-15, WT rallied to tie the match at 24. Both sides would exchange points and have opportunities to put the match away. Trailing 30-29, ENMU rallied to claim the marathon of a set and secure the match on a setter dump from Aguirre.

ENMU is back in action on Tuesday against Lubbock Christian. First serve against the Lady Chaps is slated for 6 p.m. at Greyhound Arena.
