SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — Sophomore catcher
Samantha Brockman homered, drove in four runs and batted three-for-four as the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (3-4) won its second straight game at the St. Mary's Classic.
Ashley Lopez's third-inning homer gave the Hounds the lead for good on the way to an 8-5 win over St. Edwards (0-2) at The Park at St. Mary's University.
In the Series
- Although the victory was ENMU's third overall in the series, the Hounds have won two of the last three meetings
- 11 of the program's 14 meetings have taken place on a neutral field
- Neither team has hosted the other since a March 2013 doubleheader in Portales.
Using the Long Ball
- Eastern already has eight homers this season
- The Hounds have homered in five straight games
- Today marked the second multi-homer game of the season, as ENMU went yard three times against Cal State-Monterey Bay
- Eastern is 3-2 when hitting at least one homer and 2-0 when hitting more than one
In the Game
- Brockman's one-out, two-run homer staked the Hounds to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
- The Hilltoppers pulled even on two-out RBI hits from Megan Hoffman and Karolina Rodriguez in the third
- The Hounds responded in the bottom of the frame when Brockman's one-out single was followed by a two-run blast from Lopez
- St. Edwards closed to within 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but ENMU exploded in the bottom of the inning
- The Greyhounds batted around in the inning and got their first run on a double from Karina Moreno
- Brockman followed with a two-run single, before Kamalani Peneku's single gave ENMU an 8-3 advantage
- The Hilltoppers closed within 8-5, but Hanna Gary (2-0) retired the final seven batters to earn the win
In the Numbers
- Each team had nine hits although ENMU held a 4-2 edge in extra-base hits
- Lopez batted two-for-three
- Lauren Likes singled in the second inning
- Rodriguez led the Hilltoppers at the plate with a four-for-four performance
