Greyhounds Explode to Sweep Doubleheader at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS —Malcom Smith gave the Eastern New Mexico University baseball (19-20; LSC 5-14) team the lead for good in the opening game of Saturday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Foster Field. The Hounds would not trail for the rest of the day and won the opener by a 9-4 score over Angelo State (27-14; LSC 8-7). ENMU also cruised to an 11-4 win in the nightcap.

In the Series
  • The win snapped a five-game skid in the series for ENMU and marked the third road win in the last four games at Foster Field
  • Eastern posted its first doubleheader sweet at Angelo State since April 8, 2005, which was the first meetings between the programs
  • The series also marked the first at Angelo State in which the Hounds claimed multiple wins since 2005

On the Mound
  • ENMU received strong starts from Enrique Perez and Keenan Dodd, who combined to pitch 10 of the 14 innings and both earned wins
  • Levi Shandrew and Elijah Cappello both picked up saves and combined for four innings
  • Both of Eastern's relievers entered their respective games with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, both escaped with no runs scoring that inning
 
Game 1
  • Eastern capitalized on a first inning error and took the lead when Zach Shank came home on a ground out from Reynaldo Guillen
  • The Rams claimed a 2-1 lead in the second after a RBI triple from Jacob Boston followed by a single from Elias Aguirre
  • The teams combined for five runs in the fourth inning, which left the game tied at 4-all
  • Guillen led of the fifth with a single and took second on a fielding error before ASU reliever Josh Barnett retired the next two batters
  • Smith delivered a go-ahead single and was followed with base hits from Nicholas Ankerman and Shank
  • Garlind Webster followed with a two-run triple to give the Hounds an 8-4 lead
  • Levi Shandrew entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and the bases loaded, but popped Michael Urquidi to the infield to escape the jam
  • Webster's two-out single in the top of the seventh gave the Hounds a five-run lead
  • Perez scattered seven hits over 5.2 innings to garner his fifth win of the season
  • Alex DeLaCruz and Eurick Perez each stole a base for ENMU
  • Webster batted 3-for-3 for the  Hounds
  • Starter Shane Browning went 3.2 innings for ASU
  • Boston went 2-for-3 for the Rams
 
Game 2
  • ENMU never trailed in the nightcap and claimed the lead on a two-run double from Endy Villalona in the third inning
  • Eurick Perez followed with a two-run single to double the Hounds' lead before ASU used a double play to escape the inning
  • Each team scored three runs over the fourth and fifth inning, with the Hounds holding a 7-3 advantage
  • Cappello entered the game in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out, and fanned his first batter and induced a ground out to escape the jam
  • Eastern's first four batters reached base in the top of the sixth, with Eurick Perez's two-run single stretching the lead to 9-3
  • Ankerman followed with a RBI ground out and Shank's single brought in the Hounds' 11th run of the game
  • The Rams managed one run in the seventh
  • Chris Padilla's 3-for-4 performance paced ENMU's 12 hits for the game
  • Webster added two hits to extend his hit streak to seven games
  • Dodd allowed just three hits over 4.1 innings for the win, while Cappello held the Rams hitless to earn a 2.2 inning save
