Burke’s Record-Setting Homer Lifts Hounds to Split Against Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA —Erikka Burke not only shattered the single-season homerun record for the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (17-27), but lifted the Greyhounds to victory in the first game of Monday's doubleheader in doing so. Her fifth-inning, two-run homer proved to be the difference as ENMU posted a 3-2 win over Oklahoma Christian at Tom Heath Field. The Eagles (25-19) rallied for a 3-0 win in the nightcap.

The Long Ball
  • With her 15th homer of the season, Burke has eclipsed Kristen Cruickshank's previous record (14), set in the 2009 season

Game 1
  • Burke drew the first of four walks in the inning and scored the game's first run on a passed ball
  • OC starter Kaylie Upton escaped further damage in the inning and left the bases loaded
  • With an infield single, ground out and walk in the bottom of the second inning, Leslie Reyes retired two straight batters to retain the 1-0 lead
  • Oklahoma Christian took advantage of a leadoff walk to Jessica Killer in the third and pulled even on a sacrifice fly from Kayla Eichler
  • Killer drove in a run in the fourth inning to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage, but Reyes etired two straight batters with two runners in scoring position
  • One out into the Greyhound fifth, Precious Aguirre drew a walk, before Burke hammered a go-ahead two-run homer to right field
  • Reyes retired the final 11 batters of the game to earn her eighth win of the season
  • Elena Garcia doubled for Eastern
  • Aguirre, Burke and Jennifer McElroy each walked twice
  • McElroy saw her team-best 11-game hit streak snapped

  • Sheridan Fuller tripled in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a Madison Nordyke ground out
  • The Eagles tacked on insurance runs in the second and fourth inning
  • Kimberly Herron allowed four hits over 3.1 innings for ENMU
  • Aguirre, McElroy and Elena Garcia each had a base hit for the Hounds
  • Madison Hagood scattered three hits for OC and struck out six batters
