PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico notched five second-half goals to take down Oklahoma Christian by a final score of 5-2 on Thursday night inside Greyhound Stadium.
A 0-0 game at the halftime break turned into a second-half shootout as the Hounds rattled off four unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 just four minutes into the second half. Five different Greyhounds scored in the half to make a dominant offensive 45 minutes for the Greyhounds count as Eastern recorded 16 shots as a team for the half.
The five goals for the Greyhounds matches the team's highest scoring total in a match against a Division II team since 2007. The five assists recorded throughout the match is the fourth highest total recorded in a single game in program history.
Freshman
Lauren DesCamp answered the quick Lady Eagle goal coming out of the halftime break with a goal from the left side of the box off of a through-ball from
Brianna Remedios. Descamp took the well-timed pass and beat the lone defender before finishing in the bottom corner of the goal.
That goal from Descamp sparked the Greyhound offense, who dominated possession in the first half of action despite being held off of the scoreboard. Senior
Desiree Morgas scored on a penalty kick that was set up by a hand ball by the Lady Eagles inside their own goal box to give the Hounds the 2-1 lead.
Morgas converted on the penalty kick in the 63
rd minute for her seventh goal of the season and assisted on two more Greyhound goals to move into a tie for the seventh most points in a single season in program history with 18 so far on the year.
Junior
Jaci Sievers extended the Hound advantage to 3-1 just seven minutes later on a long shot that found its mark following a touch from Morgas to allow Sievers to break free down the far sideline and get the shot off. Sophomore Angie Gonzales continued the scoring run for the Greyhounds in her first action of the 2019 season and began a final four minutes of the contest in which three goals were scored between the two teams.
Gonzalez got it started in the 86
th minute on a shot from inside the box after being set up by passes from juniors
Caitlyn Schmidt and
Victoria Nunez. Oklahoma Christian narrowed the score to 4-2 in the 87
th minute, but couldn't slow down the Greyhounds as Schmidt found the back of the net just over a minute later to bring the score to a 5-2 final.
Schmidt finished with a goal and an assist and served as one of seven Greyhounds to record multiple shots on the night. Morgas led the squad with four attempts while Schmidt and Descamp each finished with three shots.
Eastern New Mexico will need to continue to find a way to win in the final three games of the season if they hope to qualify for the 2019 Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. The Hounds will continue that playoff push on Saturday afternoon with a match-up against Midwestern State at 3 p.m. inside Greyhound Stadium.
