KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico volleyball team won its first road match against Texas A&M-Kingsville since 2004 when it defeated the Javelinas 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 18-25, 15-13) Saturday afternoon.
Four Greyhound players recorded double-doubles highlighted by sophomore setter
Rae Sapiga who tallied 14 digs and a career-high 36 assists. Freshman setter
Qitana Sapiga recorded 19 assists and 18 digs as the pair helped the team to a .226 hitting percentage, its best mark this season against LSC competition.
Junior
Jasmine Gannon totaled a season-high 20 kills and added 13 digs while senior
Sarah Tuioti-Mariner also finished with a season-best with 16 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore
M'Lee Vinson also finished with a career day as she led the squad with 27 digs as freshman
Gracelyn Stubbs was a force at the net and recorded six blocks.
The Hounds jumped out to early leads in the first and second frames and used efficient offense and a potent attack to take a two-set advantage. The Javelinas refused to give in and battled back with victories in the third and fourth sets to push the match to a fifth frame.
Trailing 11-9 in the fifth set, the Hounds would rattle off four consecutive points started by a kill from junior
Julie Tucker and took a 13-11 advantage. The two teams would alternate the final four points before a kill from senior
Christelle Kialanda closed the game out for the Hounds as Eastern held on to win with 15-13 final.
The two teams battled for entire match and remained competitive throughout as evidenced by the 46 lead changes.
The Hounds will host their final homestand of the season next week when they take on UT Tyler on Friday before facing Texas A&M-Commerce in their Senior Day game on Saturday
