Late Rally Falls Short For Hounds

Portales, N.M. – Despite a late rally Eastern New Mexico fell in their first home game of the season to Wayland Baptist 76-70.
 
The Pioneers used their speed to gain 20 points off fast-breaks and another 22 off Hound fouls calculating an 84.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Hounds struggled in the first half connecting for 13-26 from the field ending with a 37.7 field goal percentage.
 
Down five points at the start of the contest, the Hounds were unable to gain momentum as the clock ticked on in the first half of play. Matching the Pioneers in rebounding, the fight was not just on the glass. The Hounds connected for 13-26 field goals compared to 16-29 from Wayland Baptist.  
 
Coming back from halftime, Eastern New Mexico held Wayland Baptist to a 6-0 scoring run slowly gaining their momentum back. But it would take the last three minutes of play to see the Hounds come within two of the Pioneers. First with under two minutes to play the Hounds not only held the Pioneers to the shot clock buzzer but responded with a deep three from Devin Pullum.  With 16 seconds left on the clock after a pair of free-throws from Ibn Zaid the Hounds were within two. A couple free-throws and a last second fast break from the Pioneers sealed their win.  
 
Devin Pullum led the Hounds in the first half going 4-5 from beyond the arc totaling 13 and added another 10 points in the second half for a total of 23. Yosnier Cobas recorded six rebounds and went five for five from the free-throw line. Garrick Sherrod caught a couple charity shots after back to back runs to the basket ending with a 66.6 percent from the free-throw line making four out of six.
