6-1 Win Completes Series Sweep for Greyhound Softball

DENTON, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico softball team completed the weekend sweep of Texas Woman's University with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon in Denton, Texas.

The win serves as the first time the Hounds have swept Texas Woman's University in a series since 2001 and moves their conference record to 3-3 on the season. Freshman Iliana Mendoza and junior Samantha Brockman each recorded three hits on the afternoon to lead the way offensively for the Greyhounds.

Senior Kimberly Herron surrendered just a single earned run for the second consecutive outing and picked up the win, putting in seven innings of work while striking out three along the way. Eastern New Mexico provided solid support for Herron all afternoon with 10 total hits and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a double to right center from sophomore Jennifer McElroy that sent Brockman home for the first run of the game.

Senior Karina Moreno scored McElroy two batters later with a double to left field that extended the lead to 2-0. Herron worked around a second-consecutive leadoff double for the Pioneers in the bottom half of that inning to keep the Hounds ahead on the scoreboard.

Texas Woman's cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third with an RBI single with the bases loaded, but failed in the attempt to tie the game on the same play as Mendoza gunned down the runner attempting to score from centerfield and kept the advantage in favor of the Greyhounds. Herron went back to work following the big play from Mendoza and continued to work through the Pioneer lineup with ease before working her way around yet another leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth to once again keep the opposition from tying the game up.

Eastern finally broke the game open in the top half of the last inning after junior Adriana Carabajal came on to pinch run for Herron, who led off the inning with a single, and came around to score on a Kayla Marshall double to left center that scored Carabajal from second. Mendoza then recorded her third hit of the contest and scored Moreno, who reached by way of a fielder's choice to continue the Hound rally with one out.

Marshall advanced home on a wild pitch to add the fifth run of the game for the Greyhounds just before Brockman singled to right center with two outs to score Mendoza and finalize the offensive effort for Eastern New Mexico on the afternoon. Herron took to the circle in the bottom half of the inning and capped off a gritty performance by working out of a runner on second and runner on third jam to get the final out of the game and seal the 6-1 victory for the Hounds.

In total six different Hounds scored on the afternoon and five different Eastern New Mexico batters recorded an RBI on a balanced day offensively for head coach Kira Zeiter's ball club.
Eastern New Mexico will return home next weekend to take on UT-Permian Basin at the Greyhound Softball field looking to extend their three game win streak beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. MST.
