Hounds Hang Tough Against #4 West Texas A&M, Fall 92-79

CANYON, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball couldn't keep pace with an efficient West Texas A&M offense and fell by a 92-79 final on the road inside the First United Bank Center.

The Hounds (13-13, 10-8 LSC) committed 19 turnovers for the game and despite shooting 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the field couldn't match the offensive consistency that the regular season Lone Star Conference Champion West Texas A&M Buffs (38-3, 17-1 LSC) displayed throughout the evening. Senior Zach Parker had 21 points on the night, making 6-of-12 three-point attempts, to lead the way for the Hounds offense.

Senior Maurice Coleman and Nick Brown each had 12 points to help support Parker while seniors Chukuka Emili and Arcaim Lallemand led the way with six rebounds.

Eastern New Mexico made 14-of-24 shots from the field in the first half to keep pace with West Texas A&M in a high-scoring opening period of action that concluded with the Buffs maintaining a 48-41 lead. Parker made four three-point baskets in the first half alone to finish with 13 total points in the first twenty minutes of play.

West Texas A&M made the first two baskets of the second half to extend the advantage to double digits at 52-41. The Buffs continued to score at a consistent rate and extended the lead to as many as 16 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game before Eastern pieced together three straight makes from behind the three-point line to narrow the deficit to just 68-61 with 11:04 remaining.

The Buffs quickly answered that string of baskets from the Greyhounds and extended their lead back out to double digits just inside the nine-minute mark at 74-63. Eastern New Mexico once again refused to go away and put together two consecutive makes from Parker and senior Nick Brown to bring the disadvantage back down to just eight points with 3:30 remaining.

Senior Arcaim Lallemand attempted to get the ball back into the hands of the Greyhounds on the ensuing possession with a huge block, but lost the handle on his own rebound following the block and allowed an easy lay-in for the Buffs to put them up 80-70 with 3:00 remaining. Eastern New Mexico attempted to get back into the game in the closing stretches, but West Texas A&M continued to tack onto their lead with made free throws, denying the Hounds late comeback attempt.

Eastern New Mexico will take on Grand Canyon University in exhibition action tomorrow evening in Phoenix, Ariz. prior to the Hounds hitting the road for the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Frisco, Texas on March 7-10.
