Hounds Defeated in Lone Game of the Day Against St. Edward's

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Eastern New Mexico softball team played just one of their scheduled two games on day number two of the St. Mary's Softball Classic, losing to St. Edward's by a final score of 4-1.

The Hounds managed just two hits throughout the game despite trailing just 2-1 at the conclusion of five innings. Pitchers Kimberly Herron and Emma Gary stood strong throughout the afternoon despite the lack of offensive support, surrendering just four hits themselves. Eastern was plagued throughout the game with costly mistakes, committing three errors in the field and walked a total of eight batters.

St. Edward's got their first three runners on base to open up the contest that was moved back to a 4:15 p.m. start due to inclement weather this morning in the San Antonio area. Herron battled to get two outs in the next two batters, but walked two out of the first three batters in the inning, handing St. Edward's the early 2-0 advantage.

Gary came on in relief for Herron in the top half of third after Herron issued her sixth walk of the outing and loaded the bases with two outs. Gary got the ensuing batter to lineout and avoided increasing the Hound deficit.

Eastern New Mexico got on the board in the top half of the fifth winning after freshman Iliana Mendoza came on to pinch run for the leadoff batter in the inning Samantha Brockman, who got on base thanks to a walk. Senior Emma Gary bunted Carabajal over to second base before senior Karina Moreno doubled to centerfield to score Carabajal from second and narrow the score to 2-1.

Mendoza recorded the second hit of the game for the Hounds in the bottom of the sixth on a single through the left side that put runners on first and second for Eastern after sophomore Kayla Marshall reached on an error by St. Edward's. Two outs in the next two batters ended the threat for the Hounds, while St. Edward's tacked on two more runs in the top half of the seventh to increase the lead to a 4-1 final.

Eastern New Mexico will have one more game tomorrow afternoon at 11:15 a.m. against Regis in the St. Mary's softball classic before returning home on Sunday evening to get prepared for their home opener against New Mexico Highlands on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.
