PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico women's soccer team won its season opener with a dominant 3-0 victory over Adams State Thursday night inside Greyhound Stadium.
Despite a sluggish start, the Hounds outclassed their competition in every facet of the game, controlling the pace of play and finishing the match with 20 shots and a .500 shot on goal percentage. Eastern's defense swarmed to the ball all game long, harassing the Grizzlies defense and only allowing six total shots.
Less than ten minutes into the game junior Victoria Nunez sent a dangerous ball into the box off a corner kick. An Adams State defender got to the ball first it but missed the clearance, as junior
Hayden Zuniga corralled the rebound and buried it into the back of the net, breaking the tie ball game.
At the 34:14 mark, redshirt-sophomore
Desiree Morgas took on three Grizzly defenders and made a stellar cut-back in the box leaving her all alone from 15 yards out as she drilled the ball into the top left corner with her left foot.
In the 49
th minute, Morgas, the El Paso, Texas native, sent a well-placed ball into a crowded box following a corner kick and found junior
Keyara Zuniga, who out-jumped her marker and scored the third Greyhound goal of the night off a beautiful header.
The Green and Silver are back in action Saturday as they will look to defend their home turf against Fort Lewis at 1 p.m. inside Greyhound Stadium.
