Hounds Dominate The Glass In Victory Over DBU

PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team dominated the glass in a 79-72 win over the DBU Patriots inside the Greyhound Arena.

The Greyhounds recorded a season team high 50 rebounds to the DBU's 21 and only allowed the Patriots seven offensive rebounds for the night. The Hounds connected on 20-for-26 free-throws as a team, while the Greyhound bench was responsible for 59 points scored in the contest.

Brandon Meadows had a night only a first year Hound could remember as the junior recorded his first double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds. Jose Serrano knocked out 19 points after going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Rounding out the Hounds double-digits scorers was senior Darius Sawyer who recorded a season high 14 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double.

Eastern New Mexico jumped out to a 26-11 first half lead after Jose Serrano knocked down two free-throws with just under ten minutes to play. The Greyhounds pushed their lead even further adding another 15 points to the board with the help of a pair of layups and a three-pointer from Ibn Zaid. The Hound defense held their ground only allowing the Patriots seven points in the six minute span while the offensive continued succeed on the offensive end.

DBU came back refreshed from the halftime break putting a strain on the Hounds first half lead cutting it to twelve in the first three minutes of play.  Brandon Meadows snagged a pass from Mathew Mazique and knocked down a three-pointer, but the junior wasn't done yet. Meadows grabbed a defensive board and turned the play around into another shot beyond the arc. Senior Darius Sawyer stepped in for some action with the help of Mazique connecting on his lone three-pointer for the night and the Hounds were back up on top with a 19 point led and 15 minutes left of action.

Under five minutes to play and the Patriots had pulled within two. Ibn Zaid caught a layup off a fast break while Meadows passed it over to Sawyer who caught two points off a dunk. DBU kept pulling in close but the Hounds were not finished with their first half fire.

A four point spread and less than a 1:30 on the clock, Jose Serrano went for a four point play putting up back to back layups. After a response by the Patriots, Darius Sawyer drew a foul and knocked down both charity shots securing the Hounds win.

Brandon Meadows also recorded two assist and three steals to go alone with his double-double. Ibn Zaid finished the night with seven points while Isaiah Murphy and Mathew Mazique both went 2-for-2 from the charity line.

The Greyhound will return to the arena for on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a Lone Star Conference matchup against the Tarleton State Texans. Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m. and the game will be sponsored by Parker Sports Medicine
