Greyhound Men's Second Half Comeback Comes Up Short

SAN ANGELO, TX – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball took a hard hit on the road falling 80-77 to the Angelo State Rams after a second half comeback.

Looking for a redemption win, the Hounds were unable to control their turnovers as the Rams forced 24 second chances. The Greyhounds finished the contest outr-ebounding ASU 37-26 while shooting 53.6 percent from the field.

Trailing the Rams for majority of the first half, the Hounds started to connect on scoring plays with four minutes to play until the break bringing the contests within two. However, the Rams forced the Hounds into  turnovers and extended their lead going into the half.

Down by seven at the start of the second half… the Hounds got to work going on a ten-point run pulling the game within two after back to back three pointers by Ibn Zaid and Jose Serrano. Under ten minutes to play the Hounds tied up the contest 60-60, while Yosnier Cobas grabbed a defensive rebound turning around and connecting on the layup to give the Hounds their first led of the second half.

Mathew Mazique knocked down a three pointer from the right side firing up the offense as the Hounds took a seven-point scoring run keeping the Rams to a single layup. Subbing back in, Mazique once again helped keep the Hounds alive tying up the contest 75-75 with just over a minute left to play.

Devin Pullum, not ready to end the game, snatched a layup tying up the contest with forty-five seconds left on the clock. The Rams responded with their own layup resulting in a Hound timeout as they trailed by two with twenty-four seconds on the clock.

With the ball in their hands, and four seconds on the clock, the Greyhounds were down by three but unable to close the deal.

Devin Pullum took two steals to go along with a Hound high 14 points for the night. Brandon Meadows followed with 12 points while Yosnier Cobas rounded up the Hounds in double-digits with ten points for the night.

The Greyhounds will continue on the road as they stop in at Lubbock Christian for a Saturday, Feb. 8 game before returning to Portales. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.
