PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico softball finished a double-header Saturday with two wins in the books over Western New Mexico.
The Greyhounds took the Mustangs into eight innings for the 6-5 win then returned to the field taking a 4-0 lead by the third inning. Once again the Hounds saw multiple home runs and the team starts out 3-1 in conference play.
In game one, the Greyhounds went to work recording five runs in the third inning starting with
Adriana Carabajal reaching first base off a hit to the left.
Elysa Rodriguez singled with the bases loaded sending Carbajal home. The Hounds succeeded off errors from the Mustangs adding three runs on a single play.
Kianna Galindo stepped up to bat and sent Jokaria Paredes home as the Hounds went up 5-4.
Both teams went scoreless from the fifth to the seventh taking the tied game into an eight.
Sierra Rodriguez allowed one hit in the top of the eighth before striking out the next two batters. With the Hounds up to bat,
Iliana Mendoza advanced to second on a Mustang error waiting for
Elysa Rodriguez to send her home giving the Hounds the one point win.
Gearing up for game two of the series the Hounds switched out pitchers giving freshman
Jordan Bowman the circle. Coming off two home runs from yesterday's matchup,
Jennifer McElroy wasn't finished. The junior found her sweet spot over to left field scoring a home run in the bottom of the first sending herself and
Elysa Rodriguez around the bases. Stepping up to bat
Andrea Cline followed suit with another home run for the Hounds, Cline's second this season.
The Hounds went on another scoring run in the fourth taking advantage of wild pitches.
Iliana Mendoza sent it right up center taking on second base sending
Samantha Brockman and Mackenzie Patterson home as the Hounds gained momentum on the field. The Greyhounds scored two more runs before the inning finished for an 8-4 lead. Back up to bat in the fifth with
Tianna Boone on base, Mendoza hit her first home run of the season taking the Hounds to a 10-4 lead over the Mustangs.
With a scoreless inning for both teams in the sixth, the Mustangs were able to put four runs on the board in the seventh but the Hounds were too far to reach taking a double-header 10-8 victory.
The Greyhounds will return to the field for a Wednesday, March 11
th double-header against West Texas A&M. The first game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
