CLOVIS, NM – The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team defeated the University of the Southwest, 77-70, Saturday afternoon at "The Rock" at Clovis High School.
The first half was a true battle, with six ties and five lead changes. With time winding down, the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run (3:10-1:35) to take a 38-33 advantage.
Eastern responded with four unanswered points from
Jose Serrano to cut the deficit to 38-37 at the half.
In the second frame, both teams went back and forth looking for the advantage. Eventually ENMU gained the lead for good with just over 16 minutes remaining in the half.
The Greyhounds led by as many as 13 points (5:47 remaining). The University of the Southwest wouldn't go down without a fight though, cutting the deficit to six points three different times (2:18, 1:03, 0:27).
Ultimately, Eastern held on to secure the 77-70 victory.
NOTABLE STATS
- JaQuan Morris led the Hound offense with 13 points, while Marvin Mapaga was close behind with 12 points. Serrano and Sebastian Jimenez both added 10 points.
- Defensively, Yosnier Cobas pulled down eight rebounds. Adam Hess recorded seven rebounds.
- Morris also led the team in steals with three.
- Serrano finished the contest with two blocks.
- ENMU shot 44.6 percent from the floor, 25.0 percent from three-point range, and 73.7 percent from the free throw line.
- For the Mustangs, Jeremiah Toney led all scorers with 19 points. Brandon Meadows led on the boards with 10 rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Hounds improve to 4-4 on the season. Today's contest was an exhibition for the University of the Southwest.
- Eastern leads the overall series with the Mustangs, 2-0. The last time the two programs met before today was in 2013.
- ENMU is back in action on Thursday, December 9 when the Hounds head to Western New Mexico University for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
