Volleyball Knocks Off Angelo State, 3-0

Eastern swept ASU on the road for the first time since 1996

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – For the first time since 1996, Eastern New Mexico Volleyball pulls-off a road 3-0 sweep of Angelo State on Saturday afternoon at Junell Center-Stephens Arena. The Greyhounds improve to 12-10 on the season, holding a 3-7 LSC standing. The Rambelles move to 10-10 on the campaign, with a 6-2 standing in conference play.
 
Both teams went back and forth in the opening stages of the first set. Each team responded with a point after the opposing team held a slight lead. Angelo State eventually opened a small advantage, 18-15. From that point, ENMU scored four straight points to go up 19-18. Adriana Puni had two kills and a block in the short run. The teams traded points, putting ASU on set point 24-23. After an ENMU timeout, the Greyhounds found three straight points to take the frame 26-24.
 
Eastern could not be stop in the second set starting the frame with a 15-2 streak against ASU. The Greyhounds had five kills in the run, with Puni, Rylee Mapes, Mikaela Garvin, and Gracelyn Stubbs all posting a kill. The Rambelles did their best to mount a comeback, but the Greyhounds lead was to much, as ENMU took a 2-0 set lead.
 
Angelo State began the set on top, 2-0, but Eastern quickly took the lead back, 6-2. Slowly, the Greyhounds mounted a lead over ASU with small spurts. A 5-0 run sent the score to 11-4, followed by 3-0 run to go ahead 18-9, then a 4-0 streak to go up 23-11. The Greyhounds had its must effective set, finding 12 kills on 34 swings with just three attack errors (.265 hitting percentage). Eastern completed the stunning sweep with a 25-14 set win over the Rambelles.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Hounds picked up 37 kills in the contest, suppling 54 digs, and seven blocks in the contest. Angelo State finished with 32 kills, 53 digs, and five blocks in the match.
  • Stubbs contributed 11 kills in win, while Mapes added seven kills, while Puni and Garvin posted six kills.
  • Kayla Ison dished out 20 assists, with Qitana Sapiga totaling nine assists.
  • Getsemani Carrasco picked up 12 digs during the win, while Puni contributed eight digs.
  • Stubbs supplied a team best four total blocks, with Puni finding three total blocks.

"To beat Angelo State on their home court is one thing, to beat them in three sets is very special," said Head Volleyball Coach Sia Poyer. "Our defense and serving were huge for us. I'm very proud of our players, especially our seniors who have never won at ASU,".

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Greyhounds beat the Rambelles for the first time since 2017, 3-2. Today's win also marks the first victory in San Angelo since 2005, when the Greyhounds knocked off ASU 3-2.
  • Today's sweep of Angelo State is the first time ENMU has beaten ASU in straight sets in San Angelo since 1996.
  • Eastern continue its road swing, with a matchup with Texas A&M International, on Friday, Oct. 14. The match is set to begin from Laredo, Texas at 5 p.m.
