PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico University's Esports head coach is Josef Garcia.
 
He will lead the launch of the program after serving as a coach for Portales High School.
 
Garcia is a 2020 graduate of ENMU and helped oversee the Esports club team as a student where he served as president from 2017-2020. He was also recognized as the member of the year in 2016.
 
"We are excited to welcome Josef Garcia as our Esports coach," said Assistant Athletic Director Elizabeth Acosta. "His experience, knowledge, and passion for Esports made him the best candidate for the position. We are looking forward to seeing the great things he will do with this new addition to ENMU Athletics."
 
Some of his primary tasks while in the club included recruiting new members, organizing events, and interacting with other Esports teams.
 
He holds a degree in psychology with a minor in health education and made the dean's list all four years at Eastern.
 
While coaching at the high school level, he introduced the sport to students and aided them in local competitions.
