PORTALES, N.M. – Lewis-Cooper Arena was buzzing all weekend long with the best rodeo action in the southwest region.
Eastern New Mexico women shined on the final night of the three-day event to open the 2022-23 collegiate season. A trio of Hounds helped clinch the women's team a win at the annual event hosted by Eastern New Mexico University.
Quinn Leslie,
Greeley Eastep, and
Shacie Marr represented the Hounds in the short round Saturday night.
Leslie stole the show in the breakaway as she "broke away" from the competition and took first place in the event with a 2.5 tie in the long round and improving her time to 2.3 in the short round.
The senior from Canada made it a night to remember for the Greyhounds as she helped clinch the overall win for the team on the women's side.
Other notable performances include a third-place finish in the breakaway from
Shacie Marr who is coming off an incredible 2021-22 season. Her 2.9 second time in last night's short round shows that the duo of Leslie and Marr will be noteworthy throughout the year.
The goat tying competition was deep in this weekend's rodeo as all competitors held an 8.5 second run or better in the long round. Eastep finished with an 8.1 run in the long round and completed a 9.4 second tie in the final attempt Saturday night. The two scores were good enough for the junior from the Hoosier State to give her team 30 points.
For the men,
Beau Dean advanced to the short round in steer wrestling. He finished in the seventh place overall, but did not pickup any points for the team score. Other competitors for the program included
Couy McBride,
Rowdy Norwood,
Zachary Townsend, and
Trent Wood, but the quad was unable to secure any scoring points for the Greyhounds.
