A Goal In Each Half Sets Women's Soccer Past New Mexico Highlands, 2-0

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Soccer took care of business on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win over New Mexico Highlands University. The Greyhounds improve to 2-1 on the season, the Cowgirls slip to 0-3 on the season.

Both teams started the game with a quick effort on net, with Hannah Grady putting the first shot on net in the opening minutes. Both teams battled in the midfield to control possession with each team trying to probe the opposition defense. The first goal of the match went to the Greyhounds, after Kelsey Medina pounced on a long ball from Grady. Grady launched a ball from the center circle, with Medina setting themselves to pick out the bottom left corner from just inside the 18-yard box. The Hounds held out till halftime, ahead 1-0.
 
The home team piled on the pressure to start the second half, with Samantha Jeffries being forced into two saves. New Mexico Highlands adjusted their defense to catch the Greyhounds in an offside trap, working to effect on a handful of occasions. However, Eastern put the game to bed with a second goal just after the 80th minute. A long ball from Selena Casias bounced to Abby Ditzler, with the forward keeping composure to slide the ball under the on-rushing goalie. Eastern fended off two last chances from NMHU to hold on to a 2-0 win over the Cowgirls.
 
NOTABLE STATS
  • Jeffries made seven stops in the ENMU net to earn the win.
  • Isabella Ortiz provided four saves in the Cowgirls net during the loss.
  • Medina and Ditzler grabbed the goals for ENMU, with Grady posting an assist on the Medina goal.
  • Ditzler paced the Greyhounds with three shots and two shots on goal, while Brianna Eye contributed two shots with one finding the target.
  • NMHU posted 11 shots to the Hounds eight, while Eastern had six shots on goal with the Cowgirls providing seven shots on frame.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Medina and Ditzler scored their first goals of the season, with Ditzler's goal being the first of their career.
  • Ally Spicker and Emma Hafenbrak played their first games for ENMU, both starting the game. Ditzler made their first career start.
  • The Hounds now hold the all-time series lead, 4-3, over the Cowgirls. This was the first time both programs faced off since 2015, when ENMU walked away 1-0 winners.
  • Five Greyhounds played the entire 90 minutes: Jeffries, Grady, Sierra VillanuevaKinsie Mitchell, and Selena Casias during the clean sheet.
  • The Greyhounds head to Fort Lewis College for its next contest. Both teams will meet up on Thursday, Sept. 8, with kick-off set for 6 p.m.
