Men's Soccer Beats St. Edward's, 3-1

The Greyhounds scored two goals within three minutes in the second half.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer picked up a second consecutive home victory following a 3-1 win over St. Edward's on Saturday evening at Greyhound Stadium. ENMU improved to 4-5-3 overall, maintaining a 2-1-1 conference record. The Hilltoppers drop to 0-7-4 with a 0-2-2 LSC standing.

The Greyhounds struck first in the 11th minute as Alexandre Meres directed a Felix Drizinsky cross goalward to give ENMU an early 1-0 lead. Both teams battled for the rest of the half, with neither team having any clear chances.

Shortly after the intermission, Eastern doubled the advantage with Nick Huenig dispatching another Drizinsky cross past the SEU keeper. Less than two minutes later, Loris Tsiatsipy pounced on a loose ball at the top of the box to push ENMU ahead 3-0. The Hilltoppers continued to attack, ending the ENMU shutout with 11 minutes before full time. The goal served as a consolation, as ENMU picked up a 3-1 victory over St. Edward's.

FROM THE SOURCE

"We did well to meet the match objectives tonight," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Brandon Misuraca. "Going into the match, we talked about starting the game quickly. I think we hit the mark with Alex's early goal. At half, we emphasized the importance of scoring another goal within the first 15 minutes. While the goal from Nick just came outside the timeframe, I was pleased we continued to push for that second goal," said Misuraca. "Having Loris score three minutes later was a perfect response to ice the game off. Ultimately, I'm happy with the performance overall from the entire camp. Now, we turn our attention to Wednesday's home fixture," said Misuraca.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • ENMU bested St. Edward's for just the third time in 15 meetings, with ENMU last winning against the Hilltoppers in 2019 (2-1, 10/20/18).
  • Tsiatsipy scored their first career goal from ENMU, with Drizinsky doubling his assist total for the season with four after the match.
  • Meres scored their first goal of the season, while Huenig posted their second game-winning goal of the campaign.
  • Six Greyhounds played the entire 90 minutes of the match: Mathieu Beuvain, Abraham Lopez, Ludwig Scherer, Tsiatsipy, Colin Ulrich and Waschkau.
  • Eastern finishes up a short homestand on Wednesday, Oct. 18, as DBU comes to Portales to face the Greyhounds. Kick-off is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with ENMU Women's Soccer playing Oklahoma Christian before the men's game.
