Eastern Sweeps Southwest (N.M.), 3-0

The Greyhounds beat the Mustangs in straight sets at Greyhound Arena.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico took care of business on Monday evening at Greyhound Arena beating Southwest (N.M.), 3-0. ENMU improve to 9-17 on the season, while USW slip to 4-21 overall on the season.
 
The Greyhounds picked up the victory with a sweep over the Mustangs: 25-19, 25-11, and 25-17. In the opening set, the visiting Mustangs led early 7-2. After ENMU tightened the set, the Greyhounds scored five straight points to take the lead. Eastern ended the set with a 10-4 run. ENMU raced out to an early lead in the second set, then scored eight straight points in the set to take a commanding 21-7 advantage. Eastern finished the set 25-11. The final frame started with both teams trading large runs with ENMU holding a 13-11 lead. Then, Eastern put together a 6-2 streak to give enough cushion to hold off the Mustangs.

"Happy for our kids and their hard work," said Head Volleyball Coach Sia Poyer. "I was glad that we stayed focused and did not play down for the most part," said Poyer.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Sanders tied a season best four total blocks during the match.
  • ENMU beat Southwest for the second time this season, beating the Mustangs 3-0 earlier this month in Odessa, Texas (9/9/23).
  • Eastern get back into Lone Star Conference play on Friday evening when Cameron University comes to Portales. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will be the programs Family Night.
