PORTALES, N.M. –
Shacie Marr continues to shine for Eastern New Mexico rodeo as she earned a fifth-straight trip to the short round at the Texas Tech rodeo.
"Shacie had a great rodeo," commented head coach
Albert Flinn after the rodeo. "She was one of three girls who came back in two events and won herself a pretty nice trailer."
The Tularosa, N.M. native made the championship event in barrel racing and goat tying. In the barrels, she earned the ninth spot out of ten competitors after a clean 17.59s run.
Her 17.60s result in the short-go was good enough for fifth on the night and sixth when combined for a total of 30 points.
Marr earned a 7.2s time in goat tying to split fourth among the southwest region competitors. She bested her time by 0.1s in the marquee Saturday night event to split third. Her mark helped her earn fourth overall to total 85 team points.
Her 115 points earned her the overall women's champion for the event.
"It takes hours and hours and hours of practice and a commitment to want to get better. She is self-motivated and a competitor" said Flinn when asked what it takes to compete at a level like Marr has this season. "She knows what it takes to be a winner. In college it's a grind. Not only is she practicing and competing, she is a straight-A student in the biology program taking 18 credit hours. That is her work ethic and commitment to getting better."
Based on Marr's excellence this weekend, Eastern New Mexico took fifth – the team's third top-five finish this season.
Rowdy Norwood earned a bid to compete in steer wrestling Saturday night with a strong performance in the three-day event splitting sixth with a 4.9s run. His efforts helped the team earn 12th over the weekend.
The competition proved to be a test as
Blase Steffen was the last person to not make the short-go in tiedown roping. His 10.5s result was beat out by a pair of 10.4s runs.
Greeley Eastep and
McKinzee Corliss were 0.4s away from making the short-go in goat tying as they finished the event in 7.8s. The time to qualify was 7.4s.
The Greyhounds finished out the fall 2023 slate of rodeos in anticipation for the spring 2024 competition. The first event is at Odessa College February 22-24.
