Men's Soccer Drops Conference Opener to WT, 3-0

Paul Waschkau produced seven saves in net after coming off the bench

CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer fell in their Lone Star Conference opener to West Texas A&M, 3-0, on Wednesday night at The Pitch. The Greyhounds now sit at 2-5-2, with a 0-1-0 LSC record. The Buffs win their conference opener (1-0-0) and move to 4-3-2 on the season.

The home Buffs wasted no time to get on the scoreboard, scoring just five minutes into the contest. Following another five minutes of play, West Texas A&M scored again to take a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, WT made it 3-0 after just 14 minutes of play. ENMU withstood the WT onslaught for the remainder of the half, with WT leading 3-0.
 
In the second period, play was more balanced compared to the first half. ENMU produced two shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes of the period and continued to attack the WT goal with two more shots on goal midway through the half. The Buffs resisted the remaining ENMU attacks, holding on to defeat the Greyhounds, 3-0.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Matteo Azambuja and Ben Sauerländer both provided two shots on goal from the bench, with Nick Huenig locating two shots on one shot on goal. Hugo Sacco recorded a save with three goals allowed in the loss, while Paul Waschkau made seven saves in 75 minutes of action in net.
  • Theo Bennetts, Matteo Landais, and Dylan Watson each picked up a goal during the evening. Landais also dished out a pair of assists, while D'Jonte Davis also had an assist. Asaf Kristal made six saves in net for the Buffaloes during the shutout.
  • WT dominated the game in terms of shots (20-8), with shots on goal favoring West Texas A&M 11-6. Corners stacked up 11-1 for WT.

"We came out flat and got punished," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Brandon Misuraca. "Unfortunately, that's a lesson that we must learn from and go forward. As we go forward, we must be better," said Misuraca.
