Women's Basketball Pushes Past Adams State, 70-58

ENMu beat Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. for the first time since 2000.

ALAMOSA, COLO. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball held off a tough Adams State program, 70-58, on Thursday evening at Plachy Gym. The Greyhounds shift to 3-0 on the season, while the Grizzlies move to 3-2 overall.

The Greyhounds got off to a hot start thanks to the shooting of Jaz Salon. ENMU used a 10-0 run to take an 11-4 advantage, with Salon accounting for 10 points. Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the quarter, with Eastern leading 17-10 after the first period. The Greyhounds benefited from a 13-2 streak in the second quarter. With the score at 23-18 ENMU, Deja Adrian started the scoring with a layup, then Jamila Nansikombi-Gunter scored eight of the Greyhounds next 11 points putting ENMU ahead 36-20. At the break Eastern led 36-27 over Adams State.
 
The Grizzlies emerged as the better team to start the third quarter, cutting the game to just one possession at 39-36. From then, ENMU slowly increased their lead scoring two baskets for every Adams State reply. Entering the final quarter ahead 50-44, ENMU increased their lead to 10 points following a Vanessa Oduah basket. Both teams went back and forth as the clock continued to run, with 65-58 Eastern lead with just over a minute to play. Nansikobmi-Gunter put the game out of reach hitting five of six free throws near the end to win the game, 70-58.

NOTABLE STATS

  • ENMU finished the night shooting 46.4% from the floor (26-56), 41.7% from deep (5-12), and 68.4% at the foul line (13-19). Adams State shot 35.5% on the evening (22-62), finding 33.3% (6-18) from behind the arc, and 8-14 (57.1%) at the charity stripe.
  • Salon paced the Greyhounds scoring with 21 points, picking up 16 in the first half. Nansikombi-Gunter finished the night with 18 points, finishing 6-8 at the foul line. Oduah hit double figures with 11 points.
  • Leading the way on the glass, Nansikombi-Gunter collected 14 boards while Deja Adrian secured nine rebounds.
  • Adrian, Ashley Shipley, and Alecia Whyte each passed three assists during the game. Defensively, five different Greyhounds posted a steal, while Adrian and Nansikombi-Gunter each had a block.

"Super proud of our team's resilience tonight," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Blake Huber. "Adams State is an NCAA tournament type team and extremely well coached, we won at their place in a very rowdy environment. Every run they made, we answered. BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Salon set a season best for scoring with 21 points on the night, while Nansikombi-Gunter finished with their first double-double of the season (18 pts, 14 rebs). Adrian pulled down a season high nine boards.
  • The Greyhounds faced Adams State for the first time since 2019, when ENMU came away with a 64-41 victory. This marks the first time ENMU has played in Alamosa since 2013, and the first time ENMU has knocked off Adams State at Plachy Hall since 2000 (12/1/00, 64-40).
  • Eastern now head to Gunnison, Colo. for a matchup with Western Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 16, beginning at 6 p.m.
