Tyler, Texas – Buzzzzzzzz!!!
That was the sound when the scoreboard read 00:00 Thursday night on the campus of UT Tyler. The buzzer was a great sign for Eastern New Mexico men's basketball as it marked their first road win of the season.
The Hounds came away with a tightly contested, 67-66, victory over the Patriots behind yet-again another efficient performance from senior wing
Jahcoree Ealy.
"I was just thinking, 'is there any way we can come out with this win,'" remarked Ealy when asked about the final seconds of the game. "When the clock hit zero, I was filled with joy. I was so happy we won. Starting out with a road win feels good."
Before tonight, ENMU had not won at the Patriot Center. Instead, they tied the overall series with the home side, 2-2.
"We needed to figure out how to win on the road," said head coach
Brent Owen on winning away from Greyhound Arena. "It's an interesting thing to coach – the baskets are still ten feet high and the free throw line is still fifteen feet. We have changed a lot of things in our program."
The Greyhounds managed to figure out a way and got the job done tonight versus UT Tyler. One of the main reasons why is due to 31 points from Ealy. The Arkansas native has now combined for 62 points over the last two games and now leads the conference with 22.4 points per contest.
"He is playing unbelievable right now. He is being really efficient. He is taking the right shots," said Owen when asked about the recent rise in scoring from Ealy. "Great to have a guy who can get one when you need it."
The senior is coming off a week that saw him earn LSC offensive player of the week, but the opportunity to earn a win meant much more for one of the team's leaders.
"I give all glory to God," said Ealy. "I thank my teammates for trusting in me. I think all of us had to do it together and everyone did their part to win the game."
Senior guard
Lyron Bennett accomplished a milestone feat tonight. The Boston, Mass. native scored his 1,000th career point.
"I thank my coaches and teammates who helped me get to this point. I am extremely blessed," said Bennett when asked about the accomplishment. "Going into tonight, I wanted to go out with a dub and we did that."
Bennett finished with nine points and six rebounds.
Sophomore
Jose Murillo helped ENMU break a school record tonight. He tied the mark for most blocks in a single game with six total and none were more important than his final one coming with three seconds remaining in the game. In total, the Greyhounds managed to set the school record with ten blocks, which surpasses a total (9) that had been reached six different times in program history.
"Down the stretch of the game, I have a lot of faith in him (Murillo)," said Owen on the sophomore. "That play at the end was huge, but the biggest play of the game was when he got a block, retrieved the rebound, and made a one-handed pass to
Lyron Bennett who got the layup to put us up four."
Eastern New Mexico improves to 5-2 (3-0, LSC) and looks forward to a Saturday afternoon battle with another team undefeated in conference action, DBU 7-0 (3-0 LSC). The game will be streamed on the LSC Digital Network and available to listen via 105.9 FM KSEL Country.
