Sharp Shooting Sends Women’s Basketball past Midwestern State, 80-55

Greyhounds set several season highs in the 25 point win over the Mustangs

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball displayed highly efficient shooting in the Greyhounds win over Midwestern State University, 80-55, on Thursday evening at Greyhound Arena. ENMU return to .500 at 10-10 on the season and 7-8 in LSC play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs fall to 5-17 overall, while holding a 3-13 LSC record.

Eastern wasted no time in the first quarter, using a pair of 9-0 streaks to go ahead of the Mustangs. Ashley Shipley scored eight of the Greyhounds opening 10 points, while Deja Adrian picked up seven points in the opening period, along with contribution from other Greyhounds. ENMU finished the first period ahead, 23-13.
 
More of the same continued for ENMU, outscoring the Mustangs 15-7 to start the 2nd period. ENMU were connecting from range well finding their way to the free throw line. As both teams went to the locker room, the Greyhounds accumulated a 40-27 lead at the half.
 
After the intermission, the Greyhounds raced out to a 10-0 run to start the 3rd quarter to go up 50-27. Julieta Ceja knocked down a three, while Adrian and Lazurea Saunders produced layups, and Shipley hit a dagger of the three to end any hopes of a Midwestern comeback. Eastern kept their distance with the Mustangs for the remainder of the quarter, with the two teams set at 60-39 after the third period.
 
In the final quarter, a 17-4 run cemented the result for ENMU. Marley Freeman and Corin Camara got in on the act with a three during the run, and KiKi Roberts, Adrian, and Edecia Beck all found success underneath the basket. The Greyhounds finished with a 80-55 victory over Midwestern State.  

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds stuffed the stat sheet with a 47.6% shooting percentage from the field (30-63), 38.2% from deep (13-34), and while just shooting 43.8% at the foul line (7-16). MSU shoot just 30.6% (19-62), while making only 21.1% of three-pointers (4-19), and 72.2% at the charity stripe (13-18).
  • Adrian returned to the lineup with 21 points, while Shipley supplied 18 points during the game. Four other Greyhounds contributed five or more points during the contest.
  • Roberts and Beck pulled down nine rebounds in the game, while Bella Stone finished with eight boards.
  • Not only just a scorer, but Adrian also led the team with six assists on the night, with Stone adding four assists from the bench.
  • Defensively, Adrian, Saunders, and Roberts led the way with two steals, with Stone, Adrian, and Saunders posting a block.

"We did an amazing job running our offense with pace and sharing the basketball tonight," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Meghan De los Reyes. "We had a great week of practice and really locked in on the game plan, limiting post play, and valuing the basketball. Tonight, was an awesome display of unselfishness with 19 assists with our entire roster contributing to our success," said De los Reyes.

  • Adrian posted a career high six assists, while eclipsing the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season.
  • Shipley tied a career high 18 points during the game, while setting a new best for made field goals (7).
  • Freeman finished with a season best two made three-pointers, Roberts finished with a season high 26 minutes.
  • Stone compiled a career high nine rebounds, Alexandria Sariñana posted a season high two assists.
  • As a team, the Greyhounds set season high for made field goals (30), field goal percentage (47.6%), three-point field goals (13), and assists (19).
