AUSTIN, Texas – Eastern New Mexico softball dropped two games to St. Edward's Saturday afternoon.Â
Azalea Martinez and
Edyn Lopez both had three hits in both games combined.
Game 1
The Hilltoppers took the first game 3-0.
SEU's McKenna Leamon started out strong in the circle with two strikeouts to begin the contest before allowing a walk to
Alondra Vasquez. The Hilltoppers got out of the inning with a groundout to third and ENMU left one runner on base.
Eastern began with two straight errors giving SEU two runners on base with zero outs. The home side eventually got one runner home and took a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning.
The game continued to stay a pitching battle as both teams would get one runner on and leave them on base or go three up and three down over the next four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, St. Edward's scored a run after hitting a pair of doubles.
In the top of the sixth,
Azalea Martinez singled with one out. Vasquez followed that up with her second walk of the day. However, a fielder's choice play at third and a strikeout got the Hilltoppers out of the Greyhounds best chance of the game.
SEU earned its third run of the day in the sixth as they began the frame with a walk and a single. From there, a wild pitch advanced the runners and
Brook Leger got one batter to strikeout. A single scored one run and the score was 3-0 heading into the final inning.
The Greyhounds got two runners on in scoring position with one out, but two straight strikeouts gave St. Edward's the game one victory.
Game 2
ENMU began the second contest with two runners on base after a single and a walk, but a sacrifice bunt, popup, and groundout moved the game into the bottom half of the frame.
SEU added one run in the first off an RBI-double and looked to hold the edge in the matchup.
The second inning proved to be the Hounds first run of the day as
Edyn Lopez was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. From there, a
Jokaira Paredes single advanced Lopez to second and a sacrifice by
Kianna Galindo moved both runners to scoring position.
A wild pitch allowed the Greyhounds to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top half of the third, Eastern loaded the bases with two outs, but ENMU was unable to get a run across the board as the Hilltoppers struckout Paredes.
SEU scored two runs in the third off two singles and a batter reaching base off an error at third base.
The game stayed steady over the following two innings right before Eastern New Mexico got some run support in the sixth. The inning began with a single by Lopez followed by a popup.
Mikenzey Patterson came into the game as a pinch runner and stole second. A Galindo walk then put runners at first and second and
Raegan Chioino came in as a pinch runner at first.
Both runners stole bags and advanced into scoring position. From there,
Madison Begaye hit a ball to the pitcher and that gave Patterson enough space to score and push the score to 3-2 in SEU's advantage.
The bottom of the sixth helped the Hilltoppers clinch the contest as they plated five runs in the frame. ENMU did not respond and fell to St. Edward's for the second game in-a-row.
"We struggled at the plate today. We left at least nineteen runners on base and couldn't get any momentum our way on the offensive side of the ball," said head coach
Amanda Fefel after the game. "Defensively we need to support our pitchers a little more and make routine outs. They capitalized on our mistakes and we weren't able to bounce back fast enough. Tomorrow we have to have better quality at-bats and stick to what we have been good at all year."
The two team's faceoff at 11 a.m. MT tomorrow. The game will be livestreamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network.
