ODESSA, Texas – Three student-athletes advanced to the short round for Eastern New Mexico at the first rodeo of the spring 2023 slate.
Senior
Caitlin Kreider split sixth place in the long round of goat tying and advanced into Saturday night's competition with a 7.1 second result. In the short go, she finished in 7.3 seconds, which was good for her to take solo third on the night. After combining the results, she took fifth in the event.
Kreider did not compete as a member of the scoring team so her points did not affect the greyhounds final tally.
On the men's side, two Hounds made it into the short go after impressive performances in the long round in steer wrestling.
Beau Dean split third after finishing his first round in six seconds flat. He earned 35 points for that result. His teammate
Rowdy Norwood advanced to Saturday night after a 8.6 seconds mark to place tied for ninth among the competitors.
Norwood flipped his result and had an impressive 5.9 seconds run to take third solo in the short round. Overall, he took fifth and earned 60 points for the team.
Dean was unsuccessful in his run Saturday night, but he added 35 points to the team score allowing the Hounds to finish 11th among 16 teams.
Quinn Leslie had a good run in the breakaway with a final time of 3.2 seconds, but she ended up just 0.4 seconds away from qualifying for the short round.
Blase Steffen and
Beau Dean finished the team roping event in 11.9 seconds coming around four seconds away from a qualifying result.
The barrel racing field was loaded with top talent in the southwest region.
Shacie Marr had the 22nd best time in the long round with a 14.51 seconds time. A total of 54 competitors finished with a time under 15 seconds in the event.
"Caitlin, Beau, and Rowdy did a great job for us this weekend," said head coach
Albert Flinn after the rodeo. "Considering the competition we did pretty well as a team."
