Baseball Powers Past New Mexico Highlands, 15-8

The Greyhounds posted a season high 21 hits during the contest

LAS VEGAS, N.M – Eastern New Mexico Baseball used 21 hits to get past New Mexico Highlands University, 15-8, on Saturday afternoon at Brandt Field. The Hounds complete the two-game non-conference series sweep over the Cowboys. The Greyhounds improve to 9-12 overall, while the Cowboys fall to 1-17 on the season.

The Greyhounds wasted no time getting on the board with Camden Matthews scoring on a wild pitch, also sending Cooper Hamilton to third base. Jonatan Clough then skyed a ball over the left field fence to quickly get ENMU out in front 3-0. The Cowboys did tie the score following three runs in the second inning.

Demetrio Archuleta gave ENMU the lead back in the next inning after an RBI single brought Dylan Hummel to the plate, 4-3. NMHU replied to bring the contest even at 4-4 with a solo home run in the fourth inning. The tie score didn't last long, as the Greyhounds picked up two runs in the fifth inning. With runners on the corners and two outs, a balk brought home a run, then Rutger Poiry doubled a run home for ENMU to go ahead 6-4.

The scoring continued in the seventh inning for the Greyhounds. After the first three batters of the inning reached for the Greyhounds, Hummel scampered home on a wild pitch to go up 7-4. Later in the inning, a pair of two-out singles from C. Matthews and Hamilton each scored one run for a 9-4 advantage. New Mexico Highlands fought back with three runs in the seventh of their own, 9-7, and brought the tying run to the plate. However, Javier Luna came to the mound and forced two flyouts to keep the Greyhounds lead at 9-7 after seven innings.

Eastern continued to pound the ball at the plate, securing five runs from five hits in the eighth inning to go up 14-7. The Greyhounds moved runners into scoring position by stealing bases, with singles driving in the runs for ENMU. Each team added one more run to the contest before the game ended. First the Cowboys picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth, while the Greyhounds secured one final run in the top of the ninth, taking home a 15-8 win over the Cowboys.

FROM THE SOURCE

"We expected a cleaner win today and we allowed them to hang around way too long," said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. "We showed up flat to the park and that's something we can never afford to do. Offensively, we found ways to respond and tack on runs, but we did not play all that well despite the score," said Price. "I have to give credit NMHU some credit as they came out swinging it today and took advantage of quite a few missed spots. We need to clean up some controllable facets of our game going into this next home series," said Price.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Eastern offense finished with 21 hits during the game, the most by the program since the team post 21 hits against UT Permian Basin during a 15-6 victory over the Falcons in 2017 (5/7/17).
  • With the win, the Greyhounds complete the first sweep of the Cowboys since 2000 when ENMU picked up three road wins over New Mexico Highlands.
  • C. Matthews recorded his first four-hit game of the season.
  • The Greyhounds return to Greyhound Baseball Field for the first time in three weeks when they face Cameron University on Mar. 17, at 2 p.m. The four-game Lone Star Conference series will stretch over three days, with a single contest on Friday, Mar. 17, a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 18, and a solo contest on Sunday, Mar. 19.
