Men's Soccer Sprints Past Grizzlies, 4-1, In Opening Day Victory

Two goals in each half lead to a Greyhounds win.

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer scored four goals in a season opening victory over Adams State University on Saturday afternoon at ASU Soccer Field. ENMU begin the campaign with a win (1-0-0), while Adams State stand 0-1-0 to start.

After dominated possession to start, Giani Mascarel opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a great finish into the top right corner. Shortly after, Felix Drizinsky found the back of the net in the 20th minute on a cross from the left wing. Mathieu Beuvain delivered a great cross, leaving Drizinsky unmarked at the back post. The Greyhounds took the 2-0 advantage into the locker room over the Grizzlies.
 
 
Eastern put the game away with Mascarel scoring in the 50th minute. Drizinsky dribbled down the right wing and his cross fell to the feet of Mascarel who didn't miss the open chance. Adams State broke the clean sheet in the 73rd minute, but the Greyhounds scored shortly after to restore a three-goal lead. Felipe Vasquez and Matteo Azambuja combined through the middle in the 74th minute, with Azambuja lifting an effort past the on-rushing keeper.
 

NOTABLE STATS

  • Mascarel dazzled with a pair of goals, while Drizinsky picked up a goal and an assist. Beuvain and Ignacio Lopez each bagged an assist. Azambuja capped off the match with a goal late in the second half.
  • Paul Waschkau made one save in the match during the win.
  • Emmanuel Kolleh grabbed the goal for Adams State, from a corner kick.
  • The Greyhounds fired 14 shots compared to the Grizzlies' three, with Eastern posting eight shots on goal.

"I'm pleased with the effort and energy that the entire team presented today," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Brandon Misuraca. "The emphasis today was to play our brand of football and set a tone early. We will enjoy today, then focus our attention on our next match," said Misuraca.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Mascarel secured his first career brace, while Drizinsky picked up his first career goal and assist. I. Lopez registered their first assist in a Greyhound uniform.
  • ENMU have now beaten the Grizzlies in back-to-back seasons, following last season's 2-1 win in Alamosa.
  • Several Greyhounds played their first game for ENMU: Alex Garðarsson, Nick Huenig, Abraham Lopez, I. Lopez, Mascarel, and Vasquez.
  • The Greyhounds will turn its attention to Fort Lewis College, heading to Durango, Colo. on Saturday evening. The evening clash will begin at 7 p.m. from Dirks Field.
