Women's Soccer Holds Shutout In Season Opener with Adams State, 0-0

Eastern supplied a shutout to open the season in Alamosa

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Soccer played out a 0-0 draw in its opening game of the 2023 season against Adams State on Saturday afternoon at ASU Soccer Field. Both teams move to 0-0-1 in their first game of the season.

Chances were few to come be for both teams as each could not unlock the opponent's defense. Haley Huff lead the offensive effort as a substitute, firing three shots and one shot on goal during the 90 minutes.
 
Eastern were the better team in the second half, creating more shots and limiting Adams State to just one shot on goal in the second period. In the dying moments of the match, Abbie Dickens smashed a long-range effort from the top corner of the 18-yard box only to strike the frame of the goal to deny a game-winning goal. Both teams settled with a point after 90 minutes. 

NOTABLE STATS

  • Huffs paced the Hounds with three shots during the game and one on target, while four other Greyhounds adding a shot. Samantha Jeffries saved all four shots that came their way, recording their first shutout of the season.
  • The home team supplied pressure in the first half but didn't take their chances. Karlee Caballero led the group with three shots and one on goal, while striking the post in the first half. Ashlyn Bartley picked up a clean sheet making three saves in the match.
  • The Grizzles lead ENMU for shots (8-7) and shots on goal (4-3). Both teams finished with two corner kicks, while ENMU committed nine fouls opposed to the seven of Adams State.

"An end-to-end entertaining match," said Head Women's Soccer Coach Eric Belcher. "Both teams had chances to win it but failed to capitalize. I'm looking forward to watching us grow in the coming weeks," said Belcher.
