Men's Soccer Tripped Up Against Colorado Mesa, 4-1

Ignacio Lopez scored in the 70th minute for Eastern New Mexico from a direct free kick

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer faced a tough match with Colorado Mesa, falling 4-1 to the Mavericks at Community Hospital Unity Field on Saturday evening. ENMU move to 1-2-1 on the season, while CMU move to 2-2 overall.
 
Both teams were getting opportunities in the opening half of the game, but it was the home team that opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Eastern tested the goalie twice in the first half and struck the woodwork in the opening period but trailed going into half time 1-0.
 
As the second half began, Colorado Mesa picked up two goals in the 62nd and 67th minute to go ahead 3-0. However, Ignacio Lopez broke the shutout after a well struck free kick that was too much for the goalkeeper to handle, 3-1 CMU. The Mavericks put the match out of reach with one more goal in the 80th minute, finishing the match 4-1 CMU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • I. Lopez scored from a direct free kick as the Greyhounds score, I. Lopez leading the team with five shots and three shots on goal. Nick Huenig contributed four shots on offense. Paul Waschkau made three saves in net.
  • For Colorado Mesa, goals came from four different sources: Fernando Morales, Joao Pedro Morales, Manual Ponce Casas, and a team goal. Shot stopper Diego Chaves made six saves in the Mavericks net.
