Greyhounds Defend Home Court With A Pair Of Wins

ENMU bested Cameron (3-0) and Western New Mexico (3-1) on Thursday afternoon.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball began the 2023 LSC Preview with a pair of wins on Thursday afternoon at Greyhounds Arena. First, Eastern swept aside the Aggies of Cameron University, 3-0, then ended the evening with a 3-1 victory over Western New Mexico. ENMU improve to 6-4 overall, while Cameron moves to 3-7, and Western New Mexico fall to 2-8.

GAME ONE: ENMU 3, CU 0

The Greyhounds pulled out three close sets against the Aggies, taking the three sets by scores of 25-18, 30-28, and 28-26. ENMU started strong with the opening five points in the first set and posted nine consecutive points later to take the opening set. Facing set point multiple times during the middle frame, ENMU closed out set two with four kills during a 4-1 run. In the final set, Cameron fought back with an 8-0 streak to get back into the contest, but ENMU held on to finish the 3-0 match.
 
Mikaela Garvin led the Greyhounds for kills and total blocks (16 kills and 7 total blocks), while Gracelyn Stubbs added 10 kills and 16 assists as part of a double-double, with six total blocks and five digs. Getsemani Carrasco led the defense with 23 digs, as Darcy Dodd located 14 digs.

GAME TWO: ENMU 3, WNMU 1

With all four sets being close, every point mattered between the Greyhounds and Mustangs. After each team took a set 25-22, ENMU came away with the decisive third set 27-25. Both teams went back and forth, but a 7-1 run helped ENMU jump out in front. However, WNMU had set point, but ENMU rallied three straight points to win the set. In the final set, the Greyhounds held out for victory over the Mustangs taking the final frame 25-22.
 
Leading the attack again, Garvin held a match best 22 kills and 25.5 points. Stubbs helped the offense with 27 assists and 13 kills, while Kayla Ison notched 21 assists in the match along with 10 digs. Carrasco supplied 24 digs, with Dodd reaching 16 digs in the match.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Garvin tied a career best in kills (22), while surpassing a career record for points (25.5) against Western N.M. Kali Nelson set numerous season bests duringthe win over WNMU: kills (10), points (14), total blocks (four), and a career best two service aces.
  • Stubbs supplied their 5th and 6th double-double of the season, with a new career high for assists (27). Additionally, Ison posted their 4th double-double of the campaign, Deziree Flowers tied a career best five total blocks against Cameron, and Dodd supplied a season high 16 digs against WNMU.
  • ENMU were the opening act of the 2023 LSC Preview, with four games being played at Greyhounds Arena. ENMU picked up wins over Cameron (3-0) and Western New Mexico (3-1), while St. Edward's beat WNMU (3-0), and Cameron bested Midwestern State (3-1).
  • The Greyhounds return to the floor on Friday evening when they face St. Edward's University. The first serve is set for 6 p.m. and will serve as the night cap for Friday's games.
