Carrasco Breaks Digs Record During Win Over Midwestern State, 3-1

41 digs from the senior libero broke a record previously set in 2004

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball closed out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Midwestern State on Saturday evening at Greyhound Arena. Eastern now stand at 7-5 overall on the season, while Midwestern State move to 3-9 on the season.

After drooping the first set, 30-28, ENMU roared back to win three straight sets: 25-21, 25-18, and 25-20. After dropping a tight first set, ENMU and MSU were tied at 21-21 in the second frame. Eastern tied the sets count with four straight points, with Mikaela Garvin providing a pair of kills and a block in the run.
 
During the third and fourth sets, the Greyhounds amounted leads as high as 10 points over MSU. A 21-11 lead set up the Greyhounds to take the middle set, using a 17-5 run to build the large gap. In the final frame, ENMU got out to a 9-0 lead behind the serving of Gracelyn Stubbs. The Mustangs closed the gap, but the Greyhounds closed out the match with a fourth set victory.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds bested Midwestern State for kills (58-53), blocks (14-5), and digs (98-92).
  • Garvin paced the offense with 19 kills, while Darcy Dodd (13 kills) and Kali Nelson (10 kills) both reached double-figures.
  • Kayla Ison led the setting effort with 24 assists, with Stubbs adding 20 assists to the cause.
  • Getsemani Carrasco covered the floor for 41 digs in the match, while Dodd contributed 17 digs, Stubbs provided 13 digs, and Halle Sanders added 12 digs.
  • Deziree Flowers totaled nine total blocks in the match, while Garvin finished with seven totaled blocks.
  • The Greyhounds defense held Midwestern to just a .089 hitting percentage, while ENMU hit .213 on the floor.

"Very proud of our kids," said Head Volleyball Coach Sia Poyer. "We played lights out defense against MSU. Congrats to Getse (Carrasco) for her 41 digs and setting an ENMU VB record," said Poyer.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With 41 digs, Carrasco set a new single-game program record held by Jessica Weeks, against Lubbock Christian on Sept. 10, 2004. 41 digs during a four-set match stands currently as the most in a single match in Division II this season.
  • Stubbs was just one kill shy of a triple-double but found their eighth double-double of the season (20 assists and 13 digs). Additionally, Dodd recorded their first double-double of the season, with season bests for kills (13) and digs (17).
  • At the net, Flowers smashed a new career high for total blocks (9.0, one solo and eight assists) with their previous best being five.
  • Against MSU, the Greyhounds set a season high in kills (58), digs (98), assists (56), and total blocks (14).
  • Two other matches were hosted at Greyhound Arena on Friday. Midwestern State bested St. Edward's, 3-1, while Western New Mexico swept Cameron.
  • Eastern New Mexico just have Sunday to recuperate, playing Southwest (N.M.) on the road on Monday, Sept. 18 in Hobbs, N.M. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
