PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Soccer faced a hard-fought battle with Lubbock Christian University on Wednesday night at Greyhound Stadium, falling 2-0 to the Chaparrals. ENMU slip to 1-3-3 overall, and 0-1-0 in Lone Star Conference play. LCU improve to 4-1-2, and claim their first conference win of the season (1-0-0).
The Greyhounds had the opening chance straight from kickoff, but a wide cross was just out of reach of an ENMU attacker. Shortly after, LCU got on the board from a corner. The Chaparrals forced a corner after ENMU keeper
Samantha Jeffries made a save, then LCU capitalized on the set piece to take a 1-0 lead after three minutes. Lubbock Christian continued to add to the pressure as the period dwindled down striking the post twice. The score remained 1-0 LCU at halftime.
Neither team had clear chances to begin the second frame, but LCU bagged another goal with less than 20 minutes to play. A long strike from 30 yards beat the goalkeeper in the top left corner. ENMU had a couple attempts on goal in the final moments of the game, with
Caroline Jensen recording a shot on goal. The contest finished in favor of LCU 2-0.
NOTABLE STATS
- Sarah Tate tallied a pair of shots from defense, while both Nina Ballesteros and Jensen had one shot. Samantha Jeffries faced 16 shots in net, making a pair of saves.
- Kenley Blevins and Avery Jennings marked the game with a goal, while Jennings added an assist and Hannah Irons had a helper also. Kara Murray saw four shots in goal, making one save in the match.
- Lubbock Christian complied 16 shots, compared to the four of ENMU. The Chaps recorded six corner kicks, while ENMU committed 12 fouls in the match.
