Several Greyhounds Mark Career Firsts During Split at Iceman Invitational

Gracelyn Stubbs recorded their first ever triple-double during the match with UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico Volleyball program began its time at the Dr. Steve Aicinena "Iceman" Tournament with a split of Friday's action. First, Greyhounds picked up a 3-0 sweep of Sul Ross State, while falling to host UT Permian Basin 3-1. ENMU move to 2-4 overall, while Sul Ross move to 1-5 and UTPB improve to 5-1 on the season.

GAME ONE: ENMU 3, SRS 0

Eastern out matched the Lobos, beating Sul Ross 25-16, 25-17, and 25-19. Gracelyn Stubbs paced the team with a match high 10 kills and 15 assists. Mikaela Garvin provided nine kills to the offense, while Halle Sanders contributed seven kills. Kayla Ison contributed 15 assists, with Getsemani Carrasco posting 18 digs on defense and Darcy Dodd adding 10 digs.
 
As a team, the Greyhounds bested the Lobos for kills (37-30) while finding nine service aces in the match. ENMU posted five total blocks during the match, while holding an edge in digs over the Lobos (45-35).

GAME TWO: UTPB 3, ENMU 1

With every set being tightly contested, the Falcons of UTPB were able to snag the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20. The Greyhounds posted a strong showing in the third set, winning the frame 25-21. ENMU closed the set on 7-2 run, including the final four points to win the set. A tight final frame went the way of UT Permian Basin, 25-19.
 
Stubbs posted a triple-double during the match (20 assists, 15 kills, and 13 digs), while leading the team in kills. Garvin and Sanders both hit 10 kills, while Ison paced the team with 25 assists. Five different Greyhounds recorded double figure digs, led by Carrasco's 23 digs.
 
Despite the loss, ENMU provided more kills in the match (54-49) and digs in the match (90-77). The Falcons provided a superior hitting percentage (.161 vs .150) and had more aces (8-3) as well as more blocks (9-7).

"Had a good start to the day with a win over Sul Ross State," said Head Coach Sia Poyer. "Against UTPB, we knew it would be tough, but I thought we played really good defense but had too many hitting errors," said Poyer.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Against UT Permian Basin, Stubbs produced their first triple-double of their career, including a new career high 13 digs. Ison marked a new career high with 17 digs, and a season high 25 assists (first double-double of the season). Dodd posted season highs in kills (nine), points (10.5), and digs (16).
  • Meanwhile, Sanders produced their first double-double of the campaign (10 kills, 11 digs), with a season high for digs.
  • After facing the Lobos, it marked the first time ENMU and Sul Ross have matched up since 1987.
  • The Greyhounds conclude tournament tomorrow with Minn.-Crookston and Southwest (N.M.). Eastern face the Golden Eagles at 8 a.m. (MST) and face the Mustangs at 2 p.m. (MST).
