Women's Basketball Thrashes Navajo Tech In Home Opener, 129-39

Eight different Greyhounds reached double-figures for scoring during the game

PORTALES, N.M. – Playing their first home game of the season, Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball (3-1) blew away Navajo Tech, 129-39, on Saturday evening at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
 
Eight different Greyhounds entered double-figures for scoring, led by the 22 points from Nataya Lockett. The guard finished 10-15 from the field, with seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Kaitlyn Edmondson controlled the glass with 18 points and 18 rebounds (13 offensive) in just 19 minutes.

Daci Smith led the Greyhound bench with 15 points, while Abbi Holder (14 pts, 9 rbs, 6 ast, and 4 stls) played a team high 25 minutes. Jayla Smith (14 pts), Tonka Jakšić (14 pts), Victoria Barrera (11 pts), and Tatiana Platonova (10 pts) all played a role in the lopsided win.

After the game was scoreless after the opening two minutes and 18 seconds, ENMU went on a 27-4 run to open up a large lead. The Greyhounds shut out the Skyhawks in the second quarter, leading 73-9 at halftime. Following a competitive 3rd quarter (25-22 ENMU), the Greyhounds closed out the game with a 31-8 margin in the final period.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • ENMU controlled all facets of the game, pulling down 71 rebounds, creating 30 assists, finding 32 steals, and winning the turnover battle (44-17). Eastern scored 72 points in the paint, tallying 71 points from turnovers, 60 points on fast break, and 66 points from the bench.
  • Edmondson picked up their first collegiate double-double, being the first with over 15 points and 15 rebounds since Aliva Lewis in 2020. Lockett scored a single-game season high of 22 points, while Barrera, Holder, Jakšić, J. Smith, and Platonova reached double-figure scoring for the first time this season.
  • The Greyhounds set several school records: points scored (129), field goals (54), attempted field goals (112), three-point field goals attempted (46), and steals (32).
  • Eastern stays on home court for their next contest, with Adams State coming to town on Tuesday, November 19 at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. First tip is scheduled for 5 p.m.
