(RV) Midwestern State Holds Off Men's Soccer, 2-1

The Greyhounds opened the scoring in the 40th minute, with MSU replying in the 45th and 50th minute.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer (4-6-6, 2-4-3 LSC) fell 2-1 on Saturday evening against (RV) Midwestern State (11-2-3, 6-2-1 LSC) at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.

Both teams took time to get into the game, as Rodrigo Velasco fired the first shot at goal in the 12th minute. ENMU controlled the chances in the opening 45 minutes, firing eight shots total in the first half. The Greyhounds pressure finally broke through in the 40th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Alexandre Meres slipped in Nathan Le Roux down the left wing, with Le Roux's cross meeting Ben Sauerländer in the middle to score. However, the Mustangs responded with just three second remaining in the first half, setting the score at 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, the Mustangs quickly asserted themselves, pouncing on a loose ball in the box, and scoring via a deflection just four minutes after halftime. MSU didn't let up as they fired five more shots over the next few minutes, with Milo Paci being called into a pair of saves. ENMU were able to find a pair of shots midway through the period but were not able to get them on target. The Mustangs came away with a 2-1 win, keeping the Greyhounds off the scoreboard in the second half.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Each team controlled one half, with the Greyhounds out shooting MSU in the first half (8-5), while the Mustangs out shot the Greyhounds 12-4 in the second half.
  • Paci made five saves for Eastern during the match, producing four stops in the second half.

  • Sauerländer marked his team best fourth goal of the season, while Meres picked up a team high third assist of the campaign. Le Roux latched onto his first assist of the season.
