CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Softball closed out the first day of the WT Invitational with a pair of victories over regional opponents at Schaeffer Park on Friday evening. First, the Greyhounds bested UC-Colorado Springs, 9-2, then beat Fort Lewis in a comeback walk-off win, 3-2. The Greyhounds improve to 6-1 on the season, while UCCS slip to 2-4 and Fort Lewis drops to 2-5 overall.
GAME ONE: ENMU 9, UCCS 2
The Greyhounds wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, posting two runs in the opening frame.
Taighen Whitzel hit an RBI double to open the scoring, then scored off a Mountain Lions error. Eastern opened up the game in the third inning, with
Samantha Gutierrez hitting a towering 3-run homerun to take a 5-1 lead. Later in the inning,
Cecy Jurado doubled to bring home
Judith Osuna to push the lead to 6-1.

Gutierrez picked up another RBI in the 4
th inning, with two-out double scoring Whitzel from second base. Each team picked up a run in the 5
th inning, with Eastern scoring its eighth run of the game on wild pitch. ENMU added one more insurance run in the 6
th inning, with Gutierrez pushing home a run on an RBI groundout. ENMU picked up a 9-2 victory to start the weekend.
NOTABLE STATS
- Eastern compiled 12 hits in the game, including eight extra base hits in the contest.
- The hits came from five different student-athletes, while six different Greyhounds scored a run.
- Alondra Vasquez, Whitzel, and Jurado all finished with three hits, while Gutierrez posted five RBIs in the game. Whitzel scored a team high three runs, while picking up one of the team's five walks.
- Jordan Rivera earned the win for the Greyhounds, throwing 4.2 innings with four hits allowed with two earned runs. Marissa Rodriguez pitched an important 2.1 innings, including helping the Greyhounds out of a bases loaded jam in the 5th inning.
- Caydee Farnsworth is handed the loss, pitching four innings and surrendering seven runs (six earned). Kailey Bond hurled the final three innings, giving up a pair of runs.
GAME TWO: ENMU 3, FLC 2
Following a scoreless first inning, the Greyhounds jumped on the board to take the lead in the second inning.
Emma Southerland reached on an error with two outs to keep the inning alive, then
Chanler Groves doubled down the left field line to score the games first run. In the next half inning, the Skyhawks strung together three hits with a bases clearing double giving Fort Lewis a 2-1 lead. ENMU hoped to respond in the bottom of the inning but did not take advantage of a bases loaded one out situation to tie the game.

Both teams pitching hit a groove over the next few innings, with each defense turning a double-play in the 5
th inning. With the Greyhounds down to their final three outs, ENMU started to comeback. Southerland started the rally with a hard hit single up the middle, then Groves singled to left field. Osuna loaded the bases, reaching on single to the opposite field to put the winning run on second with no outs. On a comebacker to the pitcher, the Skyhawks turned a double-play as Groves took advantage of an error to score and tie the game at 2-2. Then, Whitzel sliced a 3-1 pitch down the left field line to score Osuna and win the game in walk-off fashion, 3-2.

NOTABLE STATS
- The Greyhounds finished with nine hits during the game, while four hits came in the final inning. All of Eastern's runs were unearned, while FLC pair of runs were earned.
- Whitzel came through with the game winning hit, with Vasquez, Groves, and Whitzel grabbing two hits in the game.
- Southerland provided a remarkable effort in the circle, tossing a complete game on 132 pitches allowing six hits, two runs, and two walks, with three strikeouts.
- Amiee Shanks ended the game with the loss, allowing three unearned runs on nine hits with a pair of K's.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Greyhounds have beaten UCCS and Fort Lewis for the second time each this season, with ENMU winning 11-3 (5 Inn.) over UC-Colorado Springs, and 8-0 (5 Inn.) against Fort Lewis.
- Eastern continues the WT Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 10, facing CSU-Pueblo and UCCS. The Greyhounds face the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo at 10:15 (MST), while facing UCCS later in the day at 5 p.m. (MST).
