LAREDO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Softball split a Sunday doubleheader against Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Softball Field. Eastern controlled game one in a 12-3 (5 Inn.) victory. In the second game of the day, a late lead change and a play at the plate allowed Texas A&M International to take game two, 3-2. ENMU moves to 8-3 overall with a 1-2 LSC record, while the Dustdevils sits at 6-8, and a 2-1 LSC standing.
GAME ONE: ENMU 12, TAMIU 3 (5 Inn.)
The Greyhounds wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, posting four runs in the opening inning. After Eastern loaded the bases in the first three batters, a wild pitch scored the game first run.
Samantha Gutierrez brought the remaining base runners' home with a double to left center, as ENMU went up 3-0.
Emma Southerland concluded the scoring with an RBI-single.
After the Dustdevils put up two runs in the bottom of the third inning, Eastern extended its lead to five runs with a 3-run home run in the top of the fourth. After
Chanler Groves reached on a single and
Alondra Vasquez also singled,
Taighen Whitzel blasted a home run over the scoreboard in right field (7-2 ENMU).
Eastern continued their strong hitting in the fifth inning, posting three straight two-out singles as Groves drove in two runs on the third single. Then, a walk put two runners on base allowing Vasquez to hit a three-run home run to left center to go up 12-2. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning made the score 12-3, but the Greyhounds closed out the game in a mercy rule win in five innings.
NOTABLE STATS
- Eastern scored 12 runs from 12 hits, with 11 RBIs. The Dustdevils finished with five hits scoring three runs.
- Eight of the nine starters recorded a hit in the game, with four different Greyhounds posting multiple hits.
- Mikenzey Patterson, Vasquez, Southerland, and Groves each had multiple hits. Both Vasquez and Patterson each scored three runs, while Whitzel and Vasquez had three RBIs.
- Along with their contributions in the batter's box, Southerland tossed a complete game in the circle to earn the win. The junior allowed five hits, with three strikeouts.
- Carla Arellano was given the loss, throwing 4.2 innings giving up 10 runs from 11 hits. Zakayia Fredrick recorded one out, allowing one hit and two runs.
GAME TWO: TAMIU 3, ENMU 2
With both teams failing to score in the first three inning, Gutierrez homered to start the 4
th inning to get ENMU on the board.
Marissa Rodriguez and
Madison Begaye singled to continue the inning and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. However, the Dustdevils turned a double play to escape any further damage. Eastern picked up another run in the fifth frame to take a 2-0 lead. Groves started the inning with an infield single, then advanced to second on a pass ball. Patterson followed with single, sending Groves to the plate after an error in the infield.
During the bottom of the sixth inning, the Dustdevils started to connect at the plate with three singles in the first four batters to score TAMIU's first run. Then with two outs, a walk and two consecutive singles, turned the score in favor of the Dustdevils, 3-2, after six innings. ENMU rallied with two outs in the seventh inning, as Patterson singled to keep the game alive and Vasquez walkd.
Taighen Whitzel followed with a single, but the Dustdevils left fielder made a tremendous play to end the game, throwing out the tying run at the plate to confirm a 3-2 win for the Dustdevils.
NOTABLE STATS
- Texas A&M International outhit the Greyhounds 13-9, with Gutierrez holding the only extra base hit with their home run.
- Patterson finished with a game high three hits, while six other Greyhounds had one hit. Patterson and Gutierrez each posted an RBI in the game.
- Rodriguez recorded 17 of the 18 outs for the Greyhounds in the circle but got the loss for ENMU. The sophomore allowed three earned runs and 13 hits, while Jordan Rivera retired the only batter they faced.
- Kylie Goad pitched the entire game for the Dustdevils, picking up the win. Goad allowed one earned run, on nine hits with two walks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The win during the first game marked the first ever road win against the Dustdevils, and the first conference road victory for the Greyhounds. Additionally, the 12-3 victory marks the first mercy rule win over Texas A&M International in series history.
- Eastern continue the road trip, traveling to Silver City, N.M. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, beginning a three-game series with Western New Mexico. The series is beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 20, set at 1 & 3 p.m., and the series finale will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 12 p.m.
