ODESSA, Texas – Eastern New Mexico rodeo opened the spring season with both programs having at least two team members score.
"We had a pretty good week," said head coach
Albert Flinn after the competition. "I thought coming off winter break the kids did well."
The women tied for sixth place as two student-athletes advanced to the short-go in goat tying.
Shacie Marr earned a sixth trip to the Saturday night marquee event during the 2023-24 season. She did not score with her 7.0s qualifying time, but her finals round of 7.5s gave her 40 points and the totaled added 30.
Her teammate
Jordyn Everson scored ten points with a 6.9s run in the long round. She finished the finals at 8.5s and came just shy of earning total points.
Breakaway proved to be the tightest cutoff for the Greyhounds this weekend. The last entry into the finals was 2.4s. The Greyhounds had two times that nearly hit that mark as
Tabby Tomlinson (2.6s – 12th) and
Kelby Keeley (2.7s – 19
th) both placed in the top-20.
Eastern New Mexico men saw major success in team roping. Coach Flinn remarked after the weekend that the program has not seen that many team members in the short-round in team roping.
The highest scorer in that event was
Blase Steffen as he teamed up with a competitor from Ranger College. They earned ten points in the long round at 5.5s and added 30 points with a 7.3s in the finals. In total they added 30 points with the combined score.
Teammates
Beau Dean and
Tyson Mackenzie earned a spot in the finals with a 6.1s opening round run. They followed it with a 14.8s finish to earn ten points and added ten with combined total.
Lastly,
Couy McBride partnered with a student-athlete from West Texas A&M. They earned an entry into the short-go at 5.7s, but could not score any points as they did not complete their run in the finals.
Rowdy Norwood finished the scoring for ENMU in a major way. He grabbed 30 points after a 6.7s run in the long round. He did not post a time in the short-go, but his points helped the team finish in the top-10 for the second time in 2023-24. Â
Eastern New Mexico now trains for the next month before the next rodeo at Ranger College set for March 21-23.
