Men's basketball gets back at UT Permian Basin with a 95-82 win

Eastern New Mexico wins third game in-a-row, moves to 10-4 in conference play

PORTALES, N.M. – The main point of emphasis for Eastern New Mexico men's basketball was the term, "get back week." The Greyhounds definitely "got back" as they earned a 95-82 win over UT Permian Basin Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.

Just four weeks ago, UTPB had beaten ENMU by three points. This time, the Hounds used strong play all around to grab the 13-point victory.

"I couldn't be more proud of our team this week," said head coach Brent Owen after the game. "I am proud of their effort on both ends."

One freshman had a career day as his number was called due to early foul trouble for Jose Murillo.

"Jaxon Koroll had his best game of the season," remarked Owen when asked about the 7-0 first-year Hound. "He is a talented player and great teammate."

Koroll finished with a career-high in minutes (19), points (11), field goals (5), rebounds (7), and blocks (3). The native of Canada had not scored more than five points in a game this season until today. His day included making 5-of-6 shot attempts.

"I had three offensive rebounds close together," said Koroll when asked about key moments where he helped the program beat UTPB. "I think I helped bring the energy."

Multiple players talked about having a "chip on our shoulder" after the win. The motivation comes after losing to Angelo State and UT Permian Basin last month. This week, ENMU took the opportunity and beat both opponents by double digits.

"We cleaned up our mistakes from those games and got better," said senior Greg Johnson when asked about the preparation for this weekend. "We were locked in and focused and we took care of these home games."

Johnson found a shooter's touch early in the game and used it to score a team-high 27 points. Johnson sunk four shots from behind-the-arc and grabbed four total rebounds.

One of the main points of emphasis for Johnson afterwards was the fact that "our whole team" worked to get the job done.

The box score proves that fact as five players finished in double digit scoring. Those players include Greg Johnson (27), Mario Whitley (15), Junior Hodnett (14), Tre'Von Love (13), and Jaxon Koroll (11).

Today's game wasn't always in the Hounds favor as UT Permian Basin held a 17-10 lead seven minutes into the contest. Four turnovers and three fouls for ENMU during that timespan allowed the Falcons to control the matchup.

The Greyhounds managed to keep the game within one to two possessions over the next ten minutes and then the closing moments of the first half proved to be the prime chance for Eastern to extend it advantage to a wider margin.

An 8-0 run ignited after the under-four timeout and ENMU managed to score the period's final five points to take a 53-41 advantage into the intermission.

Eastern New Mexico would go onto hold a three-or-more possession advantage over UTPB in the second half. It was a complete reverse compared to the last time these two programs met. The Odessa, Texas meeting had the Falcons and Greyhounds within two possessions of each other during the entire second half.

The Lone Star Conference leader, Lathaniel Bastian, in double doubles continues to create struggle moments for opponents. He finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Two teammates, Zy Wright and Alex Matthews led the Falcons with 15 points each.

ENMU continues to prove why they have the second best three point percentage in the nation. They connected on 8-of-14 (57.1%) from deep range today. They also hit 31-of-57 (54.4%) total shots.

One flashy stat came from the Greyhounds outearning UTPB in fast break points, 28-17.

The Hounds face a different test next Thursday at Midwestern State. Tip is slated for 6:30 p.m. MT.
