Baseball Scores Three Runs In The 8th Inning To Beat Cameron, 6-4

Gavin Perry earned the win, tossing 7.0 innings, with Luciano Terilli delivering their third save of the season

LAWTON, Okla. – During a back-and-forth contest, Eastern New Mexico Baseball scored three runs in the 8th inning to take a 6-4 win in the series opener with Cameron University on Friday afternoon at McCord Field. The Greyhounds shift to 12-11 on the season with a 10-11 Lone Star Conference record. The Aggies drop to 5-20 overall, with the same LSC record.

The home team opened the scoring with a solo home run in the 1st inning, to take a quick 1-0 lead. ENMU brought home their first run in the 3rd inning. Landon Pyles led-off the inning with a walk then, moved to second on a groundout. Demetrio Archuleta singled to left field to score the tying run and advanced to third on an error. Archuleta was stranded on third after a flyout and strikeout ended the inning for the Aggies. Cameron responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run to regain the lead, 2-1 CU after three innings.
 
Cameron's lead didn't last long, with Eastern picking up a run from a Tucker Gideon RBI single in the 4th inning. Cooper Hamilton started the inning with a double, then Gideon singled up the middle two batters later to tie the game at 2-2. The Aggies replied straight away with back-to-back hits, retaking a lead 3-2 over ENMU. ENMU's defense spun a 6-4-3 double play to end the 4th inning.
 

Eastern New Mexico brought the score tied again in the 6th inning, scoring on a run from a dropped flyball from the Aggies. The next score came in the top of the 8th inning, with Willie Ponce singling to left field to score the go ahead run with two outs, 4-3. The next batter, Daniel Pruitt doubled to the right center gap to end a three-run inning, with ENMU leading 6-3. The Aggies did score a run in the 9th inning with back-to-back doubles with two outs. Luciano Terilli induced a fielder's choice to get the final out in a 6-4 victory.
 

NOTABLE STATS

  • Both teams were close for hits, with ENMU finishing with 11 and Cameron totaling 12 hits.
  • Six different Greyhounds had a hit, with a quartet of Hounds posting multiple hits. Ponce finished with a team high three hits, while Archuleta, Hamilton, and Dylan Shea each had two hits.
  • Puritt led the RBI effort with a pair, with three other Greyhounds grabbing an RBI.
  • Gavin Perry gets the win, throwing 7.0 innings with three runs allowed and six strikeouts from ten hits. Jadon Rendon struck out the one batter they faced, while Marc Rios picked up a pair of strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched and allowed one run. Terilli recorded the final out of the game, claiming the save.
  • For the Aggies, Drew Durst tossed 6.1 innings pitched, with five strikeouts, and allowing three runs and eight hits. Victor Munoz gave up three runs in 1.1 innings, taking the loss. Carter Bourg threw the final 1.1 innings for the Aggies.

"We had a slow start to the game, but we found a way to win today," said Head ENMU Baseball Coach Riley Price. "We made a few mental errors on defense and left too many guys on base, but had a few guys really step up at the plate. Willie Ponce and Daniel Pruitt had big hits toward's the end, (Gavin) Perry did a good job on the mound for us, and I'm really proud of how (Jadon) Rendon, (Marc) Rios, and (Luciano) Terilli all came in from the bullpen throwing strikes," said Price. "Not a bad start to the weekend, but we need to come out focused tomorrow for two,". 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Greyhounds earn their first road win over the Aggies since 2021, 6-5 (2/26/21).
  • Perry has now won his last four starts, pushing his season record to 4-2. Terilli secured their third save of the season on the hill, improving their team lead.
  • Eastern returns to the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Aggies. The first pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MST), while the second game is expected to begin at 3:30 p.m. (MST).
