BIG SPRING, Texas – Eastern New Mexico University rodeo spent the weekend at the Howard College rodeo in Big Spring, Texas. Both teams earned one entry into the short-go during the three-day event.
"They had made some good runs," remarked head coach on his team's performance this weekend. "It was just too long to make it back."
The positive came from
Couy McBride who earned a spot to perform Saturday night in team roping. He partnered with Kolton Smith from West Texas A&M and they qualified on the second best run of the long round at 5.8s. Those points helped secure an 11
th place finish for ENMU in the rodeo.
Breakaway was a tough field in Big Spring.
Greeley Eastep was the only girl to make it into the short round after her 2.9s finish split 7/10. She did not earn points for her effort this week, but still held the opportunity to do so after she qualified among the nearly 200 participants.
Coach Flinn talked about how some of the cattle would move in different directions out of the shoot making it that much more difficult to come out with a run under the needed three seconds.
Steer wrestling proved to be extremely close as
Rowdy Norwood and
Zachary Townsend finished 12
th and 13
th respectively. At this rodeo, the steers were further back than they were placed in the past according to coach Flinn.
Lastly, the goat tying almost saw
Jordyn Everson (9.8s) and
Shaeden Marr (9.9s) almost make it back as they took 16
th and 17
th in the field. The 190-foot sprint to tie the goat proved to be just a little too much compared to the typical 100-foot course.
ENMU will travel to one more regular season rodeo within the southwest region. It will be hosted this weekend at Tarleton State University.
